Wonderful start to a new series!,

This review is from: Return of the Highlander (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was a wonderful story. I never write reviews but this one inspired me to. I loved the Maclean and Bella! They were so great together. I liked what he had to do to become solid and real again also. Of course being a true Highlander it took him awhile to give in and do it. The antogonists were great and I loved the use of myths in the story. If you like Karen Marie Monings work then you will love this story.

The Black Maclean, a legendary Highland chief who went down in history with a less than sterling reputation, has captured Bella Ryan's imagination. Thus, he has become the focus of her life and work as she seeks proof to redeem his name. She never expected to meet the man, but just at her lowest point, when the man she thought she loved has walked out and her muse is silent, his ghost is freed from between the worlds to come into her life and to prove himself worthy. It's almost too good to be true, and it is, in fact. As Bella and the Maclean fall in love and come closer to proving the truth behind his legend, one who wants revenge upon him has also gotten out of the in-between. Now, both of them are in danger from an otherworldly force.
**** It takes a deft hand to make a ghostly romance work, and Ms. Mackenzie has the touch to do it. Maclean and Bella's story has the thrill of a dream come to life combined with a poignance that adds depth. If you are a fan of Mickee Madden or Sandra Marten's haunting romances, then this is an author to add to your watch list. **** Amanda Killgore

Thoroughly Enjoyed, great paranormal story!,
This review is from: Return of the Highlander (Mass Market Paperback)
My sister loaned me this book, but I'm afraid she won't get it back - I'm putting it on my keeper shelf! I loved it. The cover is gorgeous, the back blurb enticing, the first pages grabbed my attention and I was hooked throughout.
The characters are believable and likable. The Highland setting is a favorite of mine. The story tells how the power of love bring together the heroine, Bella, and the man of her dreams -- what she thinks is her fantasy lover --the Black Maclean. I've been reading and loving time travels since the '80's and this one is a grand example. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to others by this author!

I really didn't know what to expect from this book as I have not read any of Mackenzie's books. This was a very interesting take on Scottish history that weaved together ancient superstitions and beliefs and the modern world. I loved the concept of the "sleeping" warriors who will have a story to tell. My one small complaint would be in the length of time it took for Maclean to have a complete corporal body. Outside of that I loved the chemistry and relationship between Bella and Maclean. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

terrific paranormal romance,
This review is from: Return of the Highlander (Mass Market Paperback)
The Fiosaiche Gaelic sorceress awakens The Black Maclean, Chieftain of Fasail, from his two and a half plus century death sleep to give him a final chance to correct his arrogant deeds that led to so many dead. He last walked the earth in 1746, but now finds metal monsters moving at incredible speeds and his Highland Castle Drumaird in ruins. No one sees him, but he observes all and wonders how a ghost can correct the past.
Arabella "Bella" Ryan and her boyfriend Brian reside in Drumaird Cottage while she researches the Black MacLean for a historical book she is writing. However, , her obsession over Maclean drives Brian away though she feels it was more her increasing assertiveness from scholarly mouse to roaring lioness that sent him off as she refused to listen to his criticism of her any longer However, she becomes concerned when she begins to see the Black MacLean in her dreams. As he tries to obtain her help, they begin to fall in love with her assuming he is her fantasy lover and he believing she is his salvation. Can a born again with passion ghost and a recently converted to self-assurance mortal find the path to happiness perhaps with the matchmaking seamstress skills of a Fiosaiche. The first Immortal Warriors tale, RETURN OF THE HIGHLANDER, is a terrific paranormal romance that uses elements normally seen in a time travel tale to tell the story of the redemption power of love. Bella and Maclean make a delightful star-crossed couple who fall in love, but both know that in spite of their haunting one another there is no future. Readers will treasure Sara Mackenzie's first-rate novel that makes believers out of us skeptics who scoff at the PASSIONS OF THE GHOST Harriet Klausner

I don't typically write reviews, but after reading Return of the Highlander I so loved the story and the author's style, that I went in search of other books written by her. In reading the reviews for Return of the Highlander, I was shocked to see that someone would actually give a poor review, saying that the author relied on "steamy sex scenes." Such a comment is completely off base. It would suggest that the author did not have enough talent to weave a tale to capture the reader's attention, save for sex. This is insulting, both to the author and to the reader because could not be further from the truth. On the contrary, Return of the Highlander could very strongly stand alone, even without it's handful of passsionate interludes, which only enhanced the depth of the relationship between the characters. It by no means relied on these scenes, if anything, they were a beautiful compliment, as, I believe, they were iuntended to be.
This story was so unique in many ways. While it did have the standard elements of a traditional historical Highlander romance(historical backround, mystical creatures, paganism, romance, etc.), it contained other elements which truly set it apart from other novels in its genre. The author's use of the paganistic elements was very inventive. It was far from the standard predictable storyline. I appreciated the believability of the mystical creatures and her use of them. While I have read other books that contained references to the Fiosaiche and the each-uisge, never have I experienced them where they were given their own center stage in the storyline. The characters were so well-developed that I found myself wishing for a second book with the same characters. I was truly amazed by the creativity with which the author wove several sub plots together to create a fabulous love story that was charming, full of genuine suspense, and, though mystical, totally belivable. I am still savoring this beautiful love story, days later.

Average Scottish "time travel" romance,

This was ok, but spent alot of time concentrating on sex like some of the "time travel" romance authors do. Relies on the steamy sex scenes to carry the plot, but I skip those, so this didn't make the plot too interesting for me.

Was great! Didn't think I would like it till I really got to reading it. Kind of long and slow in parts but you will keep reading it just to see how it ends. Got all her books after reading this one.

This is a great series of books and a great author. This is the first book in the series and it has a lot of adventure and you never know what's coming next. I found it hard to put down and finished the book rather quickly. You'll have to read the next two for the rest of the "Highlander Men".
