Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This 1994, direct-to-video follow-up to Aladdin (it's actually four episodes of the Aladdin television program, back-to-back) is a wash-out compared to the Robin Williams-driven animation feature that kicked off the franchise. The story partially involves the villainous Jafar's parrot--Iago--trying to leave his master and befriend Aladdin and Jasmine. Williams is nowhere to be found, unfortunately; the genie's voice is provided by Dan Castellaneta, and the difference shows. --Tom Keogh

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorely disappointed, April 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Return of Jafar [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Aladdin being my favorite Disney movie of all time, this was an overwhelming dissapointment. And that's unusal, because I love almost every other Disney animated movie that's been made. First of all, it looked like your typical saturday morning cartoon-plain and ordinary, with none of the astonishing visuals that characterized Aladdin, such as the Whole New World Scene. Second, the characters faces looked so disorted, I believe they used silly putty instead of paint brushes. When Aladdin or Jasmine smile, their teeth are so huge, it takes up their entire face. And Jafar's teeth look like vampire incisors. Third, the songs are cringingly awful. Boy, we could really use Alan Menken or Tim Rice! (I sincerly hope they did not write the trash sung here!)Forth, the charcters were weak, undeveloped, and untrue to the original characters in Aladdin. Jasmine says "You saved Agrabah, and rescued a princess!" That is NOT like Jasmine at all! What happened to the "I'm not a prize to be won!?" That Jasmine had independence. Return Of Jafar's is mooning for Aladdin in her tower or grousing. It gets very annoying. And Abis Mahl was a very buffonish, stupid villan, but I guess Jafar needed a good dupe. Fifth,NO ROBIN WILLIAMS! Instead we are given Dan Castellana from the Simpsons?! Don't get me wrong I love him in the Simpsons, just not here. I strongly recommend renting this movie instead of buying it, unless you really like it. However, Aladdin And The King Of Theives was very good and had Robin Williams back in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jonathan Freeman is best thing!, October 16, 2004
This review is from: The Return of Jafar [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I like the sequel to ALADDIN only because the superb Jonathan Freeman (Jafar) is present - and he gets a song. Robin Williams is not present (but I know why - - -), the animation is quite a contrast to the amazing original, and the songs aren't any good (except Jafar's song . ..). Good thing Menken didn't write any of these songs! But, I had totally forgotten that Jason Alexander voices Abis Mahl (sp?). I still like ALADDIN AND THE KING OF THIEVES because Williams is back in, but no Jafar (darnit).

3/5 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars The other two are great, this one mediocre, August 12, 2003

We rank this 27 out of the 41 Disney Animated movie that we own. It is also the highest rated 2 star movie. The other aladdin movies were popular with sons and daughters alike. This one was only watched by my youngest son, and not very often.

Even on the Amazon sales ranking of 18000 puts this one 39 out of the 41. This is only for completist that want the entire trilogy. The original Aladdin and Aladdin King of Thieves are both much better movies.
