I love Gollum/Smeagol... and Lord of the Rings. So I was very excited to see how fantastic-looking this figure is. The face sculpt is just amazing-- the best likeness of this character you will find, at any price (better than the deluxe statues!). And best of all, you get TWO interchangable heads, one of a sweetly smiling Smeagol, and a twisted, gnarling Gollum. You should know that the figure comes packed randomly, with some wearing one head or the other. There is a storage space for his extra head (and the fish he can grasp) in the base. The other great thing is that he has 22 random phrases, including the full "Wish for a Fish" song, all in Anthony Serkis' real voice. The beautifully illustrated box really enhances the product.

Now for the down side (I guess this review is more Gollum than Smeagol!). The two AA batteries that come in the talking base are extremely weak and wear fast; when changed out to something better, his voice is loud again... but you can't seal the battery compartment again, the screw holding it together won't go back in. This happened to two different figures for me. Also, beyond his great grasping hands and articulated arms, he is not very poseable. His knees don't even bend, so he can't do anything but squat. But the holes in his feet don't even line up with the pegs on the base, so it is difficult to keep him from falling over. The legs pivot at the hips, but this is pretty much useless. The head dosn't tilt up enough, so that when he is squatting on the base, in the only position he can hold, he looks downward... and you don't get to see his great face very well.

So, would I recommend buying it, or not? I would say a qualified "yes" if you are determined to leave it in the box. It looks best this way, but the downside is that the fun is gone when the batteries run out (unless you open it up and slide the base out to change them... but then the screw is broken for good). I would vote "no" if you are looking for an action figure to play with. It is really more like a statue with a little articulation (but not where he could really use it, at the knees, ankles, and elbows). But it sure does look great!

This is a pretty groovy little toy. You can choose whether you want him to say Smeagol phrases, or Gollum phrases, depending on your mood =) He's got two faces, which is really cool, and makes him a bit more fun to play with. He's a bit on the quiet side compared to most toys, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing! Very neat, and a must have for us Lord of the Rings nerds. Heck, I even named my cat Smeagol! This looks rather durable, and will look awesome on a shelf somewhere handy. Also a fun thing to put on your answering machine! hehe... Doesn't move a whole lot, so I'd use this more for show than as a sort of action figure. This is going to be a Valentine's Day gift for my personal preciousssss and I know it's going to be a hit!

I must say, for not wanting to see Lord of the Rings, I cant wait untill the third comes out for my DVD collection! While i was shopping at Target today with my friend, we popped into the toy aisle to see if there was anything good there... now mind you I am 23 and hes 20, anyways, i saw this and i just about died, i HAD to have it. Now technically Action Figures are for boys... im a girl, and i LOVE this. Its so cute and im so happy i bought it. Target and Target.com are the best to shop at! ~Kristine

I DON'T HAVE KIDS AT HOME ,I BOUGHT THIS GOLLUM FOR ME ,I LOVE THE 3 MOVIES ,I WAS SO EXITED WITH THE SONG WISH FOR A FISH AND ALL THE PHRASES HE SAYS,SPECIALLY MY PRECIOUSS. I have it in my computer room displayed,i will recomend this toy for everybody,i am 36 years old ,and i am in love with it.

This is cool. We bought him for art/modeling reference, he's very detailed and plenty posable for our needs (tho it would be nice if he was more bendy, esp so we could change the legs more). We've played around as much as grown ups do with such an item, and he seems durable, tho we haven't dragged him over rocky terrain on our elvish rope like a child might, tho he does seem tough enough to take it.

For the LOTR fan who wants a memorable collectable...this is for you! Too bad they are hard to find now. Got one for my older brother two weeks ago. He thinks it's awesome. Mine has a defect though. A couple of the sayings are garbled. Oh well. For 10$ plus 6$ shipping it couldn't be beat.

Do not let the big disappointment review cloud your judgement about getting this item. That review does make some valid points, but overall this is a masterful creation by Toybiz. I have dozens of toybiz figures and this has to rank among the best, possibly the best.

First we have to judge this product as a whole. It is a tremendous scuplt to start. Or two scuplts if you prefer with 2 heads. The base is of very good quality with a convienant tray that comes out and in for the other head. The phrases use Andy's voice and are excellent and fun, hence the 5 for fun review. Mine is very movable, arms, legs, the head tilts up quite easily. That is particularly ironic given a review in another comment because for the 6inch toybiz LOTR figures it is hard to get the heads to tilt up. This one is no problem. I have resisted getting any kind of Gollum/Smeagol figure up to this point for various reasons. But my collection would be missing a big part without something of him. You can not get a better scuplt of him from toybiz.

The flaw? Yes he does tilt backward and is prone to topple off when on the base. Is this flaw fatal? Hardly. Put something behind like a wall or anything else and you have one of the best toybiz products so far in the LOTR line. Don't miss the Gollum for the trees.

This is a wonderful collector item as the phrases spoken are from the movie and the sound is great,for all Smeagol/Gollum lovers,THIS IS THE COLLECTIBLE TOY TO OWN!!!

I was truly disappointed. The cheaper version for 8.99 is more fun because it is at least very poseable. This one can stay in the box, it's not much good for anything else. The plush doll has a better likeness than these two heads and I was disappointed that the doll itself doesn't talk, but the base is what actually talks. He doesn't balance on the base but tips over because he is bottom heavy and can't straighten his legs.
Truly a disappointment, but too late to get my money back because I opened the box. My best recourse would be to try to resell it on Ebay.
