Best Volume Yet,
By
This review is from: Return to Labyrinth Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
Like most who have been reading Return to Labyrinth I was disappointed by the first volume. The second one brought it home for me with it's awesome storytelling, but still lacked in the drawing department. Volume three is starting to bring the story together, and wow is it ever a story. Sarah/Jareth fans rejoice, we got incredibly exciting Sarah/Jareth moments, and a twist that's sure to leave you feeling for Sarah as well as leave your heart aching for Jareth. If you wanted a love story--and come on, who didn't--this volume is going to give it to you. The artwork is still terribly misleading with the cover artist who's incredible, not doing the actual drawings in the book, and the book artist...well, he draws better than me, but no where near the caliber I would have liked to have seen for a book with this much anticipation. All in all, you're not reading this story for the drawings anyway, it's all about the story, and the story is getting down right fantastic! If you like Return to Labyrinth you're going to love this volume, and you should be out there buying it right now, taking it home, reading it, and doing what Sarah would have done, daydream about the dark brooding king and his wayward queen. If you're a fan of the movie Labyrinth and you haven't picked up this series or picked up the first volume, got discouraged and haven't done anything since, it's time to pick it up, because the story is fantastic, and romance, intrigue, and revenge are in the air. Finally, if you didn't even know Return to Labyrinth was even out there, where have you been? Go out and buy this manga...WE GOT ROMANCE PEOPLE!
Be warned however, the author's note in the back of the book seems to suggest we've got another long wait for the final volume (this is a 4 volume series). Since we've been waiting a year and a half for this volume, I'm guessing we've got at least another year for volume 4. But listen, go out, read volumes 1-3, rewatch Labyrinth, remember why you loved it so much, and then go to www.fanfiction.net and read some good fanfiction to tide you over. And if you don't know what fanfiction is, you're in for the treat of your life!

Not as good as the others in the series,

This review is from: Return to Labyrinth Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
For anyone who's been paying attention to this series from the beginning knows that it took the writers and artists just over a year between the first and second mangas. But this one took just under 2 years! With the amount of time they took I thought this one was going to be great, especially after the second one! I was sadly mistaken.
Personally I didn't think this one was that good. The artistry really lacked, more than usual, and it was very obvious compared to the second manga. It didn't seem like they really knew how to put this one together. Such a short amount of things happened but took so long to get around to. It also didn't feel believable like the others, meaning it was much harder to really be drawn into the story. The one thing that just kept bugging me what how Jareth was drawn, and while he's not the main character in this series, he still greatly matters. There were times that he actually looked, well, fat! Like he'd randomly been squashed down and got a beer belly, or the cloths looked cheap. It was odd. It saddens me that the third one didn't live up to it's previous mangas and I have a bad feeling it'll be a while til the final one. I would give this one 3 1/2 stars if possible because I certainly have read worse, and this wasn't terrible, just not as good as the others. If the last one looks and feels as bad as this one I fear it may kill a great story.

Not worth it,

This is really no work of art. The artwork is nothing special (at all), and the story seems to have been written by a 15-year old. It does not really develop the relationship between Jareth and the girl, the protagonists here are mostly new, and very bidimensional. I bought all three volumes because I really liked the movie. Big mistake.
People seem to have liked this volume better, yet it is part of the collection and still not very good, just slightly better than the previous one. Jareth comes back with a little mystery, but if you're looking for a sequel or development of Labyrinth's story and magic, this is not it.

Somehow, Forbes has managed to channel David Bowie in his work. This man must have lived and breathed Labyrinth for months on end. As I read his lines, it was like I could hear his voice in my head.
Return to Labyrinth is the true successor to the original movie. The magical world is explored and expanded upon much more deeply than I'd have ever thought possible, even going so far as to explain how Jareth was able to control it. The new characters fit perfectly into the universe, their interaction with the original characters equally as flawless in their execution. If you are a fan of the original movie, do yourself a favour and invest in this book!

No better than the first volume,

I admit I bought all available volumes in one go without even reading the first one. That was a mistake. Going through all the volumes was painful. The plot had to be spoon fed to readers by having a cheap "sit down and explain everything" scene instead of letting the readers find everything out naturally because it wouldn't make sense and would be too difficult for the writer to be creative in that sense anyway. He's too busy shuffling us from one event to the next that you don't know where you are. The characters are all still face value. I didn't see any reason for growth in Toby. Somehow, I find it hard to think that his training in the goblin economics of money grubbing as character building. The art did not get any better in subsequent volumes either. The expressions on all the characters faces are so vague you'd think they were drugged or sleepy. Either that or they had a stroke and now have a lopsided disproportioned look to them instead. I don't believe for one second that Chris Lie did anything more on the artwork than glance over some interns shoulder and say "Good `nuf" and get paid. I'm sure that anything between Jareth and Sarah in the 4th volume will be anti climatic at best. The ending is sure to be a disappointment. I'll only get the 4th volume for the cover art.

Better than ever,

This series has come along way from volume 1. The plot and characters are now fully developed and I cannot wait to see what's in store for the finale. While I was disappointed in how it started off, this series is now an engaging and worthy sequel to the movie. I just hope we don't have to wait quite as long for vol 4!

Not too bad actually,
This review is from: Return to Labyrinth Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
This volume wasn't too bad. The art was still lacking, but I can't say I was expecting it to change anyway. I wish they would have had a bit more of Jareth's plot to get Sarah in this volume because they seem to have a lot of it to cover in the last volume. They also have to carry out the rest of Toby's story in the last volume so I just hope that it isn't going to lack in detail on both because it isn't a very big book I see. I will be very disappointed if the last volume does lack in detail because the 3rd one did leave me wanting more. I could actually picture David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly saying these words as if it were an actual movie. For those of you who are skeptical about reading the books, don't give up too quick because the story does pick up a bit, and that's coming from someone who despised the fact that they made this story into books rather than a movie!

More Like a Fanfic,
This review is from: Return to Labyrinth Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
I have read Return to Labyrinth volumes 2-3 but only about half of one.
The first volume was just so bad that I couldn't read it anymore. It was as if I were reading an amateur fanfic. The second volume honestly redeemed itself and seemed to improve a lot on the artwork and story. I didn't love it, but i didn't hate it either and I read that one all the way through. I didn't need to finish the first volume to know what was going on and I didn't lose any of the story. Now as for this third volume......it was alright. not as good as the second volume, but it was interesting enough for me to finish it. It is interesting to see that *WARNING SPOILERS* Jareth gets his powers back and I'm curious to know what will happen between him and Sarah. The story was just sort of....ahhhh...annoying. It didn't seem as long as Volume 2. And honestly the entire plot is very predictable I'm pretty sure I already know what's going to happen in Volume 4. The artwork annoys me. I was soooo excited when i found out that the same woman who does Alichino did the cover art for Return to Labyrinth i was thinking she was goign to do all of the artwork. I was like WOW! AWESOME! She is the PERFECT artish for this manga!........I was sadly...and i mean SADLY dissapointed. volume 3 seemed rushed and I was dissapointed with it. I think I'll continue to volume four...but that's in august...i hate waiting... -_- Anyway, if you're a fan of Labyrinth like I am i would read the mangas just for the pure sake of saying "yeah I read the mangas" but honestly....I'm sure I can find a better "fanfic" then this.

Excited but cautious,
This review is from: Return to Labyrinth Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
I first saw labyrinth in 6th grade and it has been one of my favorite childhood movies and will continue to be. I picked up this series for it's gorgeous cover art and I agree with everyone else, we pretty much got duped with the inside artistry. Other than that I'm loving the story for the Sarah/Jareth moments and the tension he obviously feels concerning her. Toby's story for me feels pretty secondary. I would be cautious though in assuming it's going to end up being Sarah/Jareth...I can see the storyteller having him help her find herself and her dreams without the need for reabsorbing Mogget, and it ending up not being a love story at all so much as the rescue of the decaying labyrinth and Jareth regaining his power through making Sarah remember her dreams. Who knows, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a fast one. Things are not always what the seem. You can't take anything for granted. ^_~
