Book Description

November 1, 2004
Return to La PaZ is the bizarre but entirely true story of a traveller from East Germany who had enough of the Wall. For the first thirteen years of his life Tom is jailed behind the Wall in East Germany. When the Wall comes down, Tom escapes and goes in search of freedom. It’s an action-packed pursuit. Tom is constantly on the move. He does a variety of jobs, but his main search is for new experiences. Eventually, he ends up in South America looking for god through shamanism and Ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic substance, and gets entangled in the deadly politics of the drug trade. Though the political Wall which had imprisoned him in his childhood has collapsed, he creates new walls and pushes himself to the limit to break them.

Review

"Join Tom on a roller-coaster ride as he cuts cross continents to see beyond the surface of reality." -- Deccan Herald, November 14, 2004

From the Author

Thomas Reissmann was born in East Germany and having spent the first thirteen years of his life behind the Wall, it did not take him long to seize the opportunities denied to his parents and travel the world. He went to High School in California and studied Tourism in the UK and Australia. He subsequently worked as research assistant in Costa Rica, where he investigated the effects of Tourism on local communities. He also managed a hostel in New Zealand and filmed travel documentaries all over the world, including India, Kashmir and Oregon. While he is dedicated to making tourism more sustainable, his passion lies in inspiring people to discover their own. He believes that the pilgrimage of travel may be one of the most effective ways of doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to La Paz, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Return to La Paz: Tales of Travel, Meditation and Ayahuasca (Paperback)
The spelling mistakes add realism to Tom's unbelievable rite of passage through the Amazon, and the vine of death. His life story inspires courage and dreams through many delicious hours of non-stop reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging., July 29, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Return to La Paz: Tales of Travel, Meditation and Ayahuasca (Paperback)
At age thirteen, Reissmann is liberated from the confinement behind the Berlin wall. This experience launches him on a steep trajectory for escape that has him on adventures that would make the hands of most hardy travellers begin to sweat. His succinct and poignant satire begins to unravel as he disappears further into the jungles of South America, and further into his own subconscious, ultimately emerging reconstructed, as someone quite different. His exotic and extreme experiences form a prism of destruction and creation through which we can all see our own lives. It's a compelling read and a universal story.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The enchanted journey", August 18, 2005
By
This review is from: Return to La Paz: Tales of Travel, Meditation and Ayahuasca (Paperback)
Reissmann takes the reader on an exciting journey through the mysterious jungles of Brazil and Peru, through his mystical experiences with ayahuasca as he - and the reader - adventures into the unknown. It was an enchanting journey; one in which I felt I was living vicariously through his own experiences, with a surprise always waiting for me around the corner. Reissmann has a beautiful way of conveying his story by spinning an intricate web of ideas, philosophies, and teachings together. He is an inspiring and talented writer. I immensely enjoyed reading this true tale!
