Pleasant meandering, July 20, 2007
This isn't Pogo at his satiric sharpest, but a pleasant meandering visit to the Okefenokee characters we've come to love. Pogo, Churchy, Owl and the rest amble amiably from a Krazy Kat homage, through the musical worm family, to a beauty contest based on survival of the fittest, through some commentary on politics and on the Cold War. Since this collection captures part of the 1964 presidential election - complete with Pogo being nominated to the post, without his knowledge or consent, as usual.
There's nothing quite like it these days. Pogo's gentle spirit, sharp insight, and charming goofiness have no equals in today's funnies. Nor does the swamp's easygoing mangling of the English language, as seen in the timeless carol that ends this collection:
Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla walla Wash., and Kalamazoo.
Nora's freezing on the trolley
Swaller dollar cauliflower, alley garoo!
