5.0 out of 5 stars Very good disc, September 12, 2006

Good hip hop with lyrics over and beyond what was expected. Prodigal Sunn talks about things others don't - Procrastinating, being Puzzled in life, living as Godz People, plus more. Another good, quality CD from the Wu family.

3.0 out of 5 stars Return of the Sun, March 14, 2006

This review is from: Return of the Prodigal Sunn (Audio CD)
With the brash of Sunz of Man releases being released over the past few years (each with wavering quality), I admit that I was skeptical upon purchase. However, I must also admit I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this album. It starts off with a typical Wu-Fam sounding beat for the track, "In My Life," which really sounds like it belongs on Rae's Immobilarity. Prodigal holds it down lyrically, and 12 O'Clock drops nicely on the guest appearance. Next up is "Soul Survivor" which has a Wu-Tang Killer Bees (the first one) feel to it. The beat is a simple chopped sample over a classic Wu drum pattern. Fairly typical, but hot nonetheless. "Movin On Up" continues the fire with a summer-type positive vibe, featuring the vocal talent of Madame Def (she can really sing, and she fits this vibe perfectly). "Brutality" is one of two RZA beats on the album, and this beat returns to the gritty, grimy sound from RZA. This song really has that old-school Wu-Tang feel, and one can only hope this reflects the direction in which RZA beats are headed. The other RZA beat featured on the album provides the soundscape for "Lovely Ladies." Unfortunately, to me, this one of the worst tracks on the album, but, then again, I never really felt the Wu-style love songs. In fairness, the sample-chopping is old-school RZA and the beat is a simple break. Other notable tracks include "Betrayal" (with some nice keys providing the melody here), "Puzzled" (which is reminscent of some of the better moments of KP's View from Masada), and "Sunshine" (which again features the beautiful voice of Madame Def, razor-sharp lyrics from Prodigal, a tight drum pattern, a semi-eery fretless bass riff, and a more uptempo mix of instrumentation). My personal favorite is "Godz People," which features the oft-singing 12 O'Clock with one of his better singing-hooks in a while (It's been a long time). While he's off-key as always, he rides the melody well, and sets the tone for some of Prodigal's more inspiring lyrics over a simple, yet addictive sweet-horn melody. While most of the album is really worthwile, there are a few songs which sound out-of-place. It sounds as if the quasi-clubby trend of other Wu-Fam members caught on and spread to P.Sunn's effort. Aside from the two or three tracks, this is a solid album, much better than I expected, and shows a lot of promise for the future. It's certainly one of the better Wu affiliate releases in a while. I'd say that if you have been a Wu-Fam fan (especially a Sunz of Man/Royal Fam fan), then you will enjoy this album. If you've been disappointed by the recent Sunz of Man releases, then this should successfully end your disappointment. If you've never heard of Sunz of Man, how did you stumble upon this review?
Rating on my scale: 3.5 of 5 OR 7 of 10

4.0 out of 5 stars Good music from the Wu Camp, June 27, 2005
This review is from: Return of the Prodigal Sunn (Audio CD)
Its ya boy Mikado-Gizzle unoffical wu-tang affiliate. P-Sunn is a veteran rapper that still has the hunger that a cassidy brings. Its rare to see that in an artist. This album has a few tracks produced by Rza that bring out P-sunn's voice. The album never really falls off anywhere. Its a typical thought provoking album from the Wu. Alot of you young cats dont respect what the Wu has done for hip hop and what they continue to do. Leave the wack ass Gucci Mane and Boyz in da Hood Cds alone and pick up real hip hop and listen to it. P-Sunn can out rap any o these southers rappers but he gets no love from the 21 and under crowd. SUPPORT THE PEOPLE WHO DESERVE IT!!
