One of my major pet peeves in romance writing is when a writer tries to pass off idiocy as somehow charming and adorable. Not only was Morgan not charming and adorable she was a moron. There were any number of ways she could have backed up her time travel story just by showing her husband the zipper on her jeans, the fabric in her clothes, THE TAGS!! None of that ever occurred to her. She designed a sleeveless gown for herself that any middle school kid will tell you would not have been acceptable at that time because, despite the fact that she was raised by an antiques dealer and was supposedly a history buff with an affinity for that time period, she not only never picked up on that fact, she also didn't have eyes to see that no one else wore such outfits. She caused problems every minute by being a petulant, unintelligent brat and that was supposed to be a suitable substitute for actually being a strong, independent woman. The bikini scene was contrived, the joust scene even more so (she couldn't figure out why running down to the jousting field and then giving someone else her favor was a bad idea) and everything about her just annoyed me no end. And what was all this concern about Robert, a guy she met twice for about five minutes? The whole story was so forced and I'm so over the "girl with IQ of a turnip gets awesome guy" plot line.

There are so many great conflicts that can arise naturally if the author put a little more effort into research. It would be easy for a history buff from the future to slip up and mention something that hadn't happened yet but was about to, causing everyone to suspect her when her words showed true. It isn't necessary to fall back on the same tired old schemes all the time.

The book was sweet, but I found it lacking in a few key things.
Firstly, you barely get to see Morgan's life in modern times. I think it would help to establish her character and situation if we followed her through an at least entire day of her life. She mentions that she never felt like she belonged as a child, and also that she missed her mother, but it would be more effective if we were shown these things rather than told.

There were also some historical discrepancies. This is 1444. If people even suspected that a woman was a witch, she would be burned at the stake. Anyone connected with magic would be ostracized, not embraced.

The idea and plot were interesting, but the lack of character definition and historical accuracy made this book merely OK.

A time travel story that look promising in Chapter 1, "Return of the Rose" started going downhill and never recovered until the end. :-(

This is the third book that I have read written by Theresa Ragan but I am sorely disappointed. The first book I read Having My Baby was very good and it prompted me to look for her work. The second one Taming Mad Max was okay. There were some things I did not like but I still found it enjoyable. Now, this one, the "Return of the Rose" was a true disappointment.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS*** Here goes!!!
Morgan Hayes, the heroine is 24 years old and came to the modern world in 1986 as a day-old infant. So, she is a Millennial, which basically means she is part of the "connected" generation. From video games to computers, smart phones and movies, she was exposed to it. That said...how can she be dimwitted in 1444?

First rule of time travel - do not contaminate the timeline!!! So, first, she saves an infant by doing CPR. Goodness gracious, what was she thinking? And then she tries to teach Derek Vanguard, Lord of Braddock Hall CPR? Second, she brings the bikini to the 15th century... arghhhhh!!!

Morgan might not be a Star Trek fan or a sci-fi aficionado, but come on... living at the turn of the millennium, that is almost common knowledge because of the movies, TV, video games and the internet.

And how can not she have at least a basic understanding of life during the late Middle Ages/ Early Renaissance.

I actually am not a Fiction reader, however, the title "Return of the Rose" caught my eye. I downloaded on to my Kindle for a very long, and difficult six hour flight. The story-line gripped me right away, and I could not put it down. "Return of the Rose" had me transported to all the beautifully written characters, the far-away lands, and love oozed from the pages. For this "Self-Help, Non-Fiction avid reader" I throughly enjoyed the read, and when the pilot announced we were on finally approach I could hardly believe my ears. Look forward to more books by Theresa Ragan. She is an author that will go far in the Romance Novel World. You knocked it out of the park, Miss Theresa! Best $2.99 I spend!

Interesting idea and there was so much that could have been done to bring this story to life. The main character Morgan was more 14 year old than 24 year old. She was whiny and annoying, but not about what she should have been. At first she has no idea when the plague was or Joan of Arc or any other major event in history then all of a sudden she is chatting with the King (because that happened ALL of the time back then!) and she is pulling Margaret of Anjou out of no where as well as details about Henry IV and his reign. Really?

Frankly, with the way she acted, the way she talked, and how she was dressed (tennis shoes and jeans---no one noticed her odd clothing?) she should have been accused of being the Witch. And the story would have had a much more satisfying end.
