The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook

Biography

Declan MacManus is known as one of the most idiosyncratic new wave performers, under his alias Elvis Costello. The UK-born singer-songwriter had a string of Top 30 chart hits in the UK in the late 70s and early 80s, though his work throughout his career has always gathered critical respect.

Although he was initially marketed as a punk, his music originally seemed to sound more like ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Costello Store

I admit I'm a big EC fan but this is really good.

I wonder if they spent all their time mixing for 5.1 on the DVD, then just combined channels for the CD.

This is what an Elvis Costello concert sounds like.

Okay, I sprung for this, even thought it's crazy expensive for what you get. Putting the issue of cost aside, the real problem here is the sound. The CD sounds terrible. Elvis' voice is way back in the mix, and the whole thing is way too bass heavy. I wonder if they spent all their time mixing for 5.1 on the DVD, then just combined channels for the CD. Because the information is there -- it's just mixed terribly. I tried listening to the 2-channel stereo on the DVD, and it sounds like the same bad mix. Please bear in mind -- this isn't a complaint from a fussy audiophile -- I've played this on several different systems at different price points, and it just stinks. It's really too bad. The band sounds like they were in fine form, and the arrangements are good. In short, a disaster.

When you're Elvis Costello and you've written as many great songs as he has, how do you create a unique theatrical experience? Why, you put a bunch of those songs on a giant spinning wheel, and have audience members spin the wheel to determine the next song that the band plays.

That's what Elvis first did in the late 80's, and does again here with terrific results. His band, The Imposters, plays spectacularly and right on cue, as if you could drop a quarter in the jukebox and they could launch into any song you name.

The CD and DVD have some different performances of the songs in this set, which span Elvis' career, but the DVD is especially enjoyable as you get to view the show from a front-row seat. The CD omits the "spinning" parts of the show and smoothly segues from song to song in what is one of the most enjoyable Elvis live setlists I've ever heard. Along the way we get treated to a guest appearance by The Bangles, a great cover of the Rolling Stones' "Out of Time", and some of the most ferocious guitar playing I've ever heard coming from Elvis' guitar. The CD has a very "live" feel to it, giving you the feel that you are sitting in the audience. And the band sounds like it could be a performance from 1979 - engergetic, loud, and rocking.

I'll be returning to this album and DVD frequently - 5 stars!

I've been listening to Elvis Costello since 1977 when I was 10 and given his first album 'My Aim is True' as a party gift for attending a friend's Bar Mitzvah. Since that time I've seen Elvis perform over 40 times. Aside from being an amazing songwriter, he's a great performer and artist. There are not many that could make an interactive show with a song wheel move along at such a great pace night after night. I was able to see Elvis w/the Imposters on the Revolver tour at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ and also at the Paramount Theatre in Dix Hills, NY (they were the inaugural act for the grand re-opening). This live album is a great way to experience the power and passion of one of this centuries greatest recording artists. If you have only owned an Elvis Costello Greatest Hit's album you'll definitely want to get this to 'add to your collection' as hearing Elvis and the Imposters perform live is truly a moving experience. It's a great mix of old classics and new gems! Besides, how many of his contemporaries are still creating high-quality new music rather than rehashing the same songs they wrote over 30 years ago? Not many!

I would not be disappointed with this item had it not been described as being much nicer than it really is. "Lavish box"? It's in a cheap paperstock box (which Amazon managed to crush by shipping mine in the same box with several hardcover books). The 40 page book has the sleeves for the CD, DVD, 10" record and poster bound in (along with the Spinning Songbook on the cover), making it difficult to read. This would have been OK to pay <$100.00 for, but at over $200.00, I feel taken advantage of.

The good news is that the CD and DVD are excellent. (I haven't listened to the 10" EP yet.) And the tour diary is an interesting read.

For as many albums as EC has released in his long career, his oeuvre is surprisingly short on live albums. This release might explain that - the sound quality is mediocre, the backing vocals are hit and miss, and most frustratingly, the choice of material is fairly uninspiring, with many of the songs sounding very similar. There are updated versions of "Watching the Detectives" and "Everyday I Write the Book," and a guest appearance by Susannah Hoffs, but I would not recommend this album to any but the most die-hard EC fan.

Judging by the Spinning Wheel on the cover, there could be a very interesting live album in the vaults: And Your Bird Can Sing; Pump It Up in 6/8; God's Comic; The Element Within Her; Beyond Belief; The Other Side of Summer; Brilliant Mistake; So Like Candy; The River in Reverse - there are at least 15 songs shown I would rather hear played by the amazing quartet of Thomas, Nieve, Faragher and Costello. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Volume 2!

I saw my first Elvis show on the "Imperial Bedroom" tour. I've been a fan every since. I was fortunate to see two shows on this last tour (Chicago and Indianapolis). Both were fantastic. The man is better live now than he was 30 years ago. I was pumped to find out he'd be releasing a live disc of this tour, especially after "The Costello Show" series of live recordings crashed and burned. What we do get on this disc is quite dynamic. The versions of "I Want You" and "Watching the Detectives" are the standouts for me. I even like Susanna Hoff's singing of "Tear Off Your Own Head." Unlike other reviewers I have no problem with the sound. But where's the rest??? Shows on this tour ranged from two to three hours, and in some cities Elvis belted out over 30 songs. Why aren't we getting a complete show? Fine, he wants to keep it to a one cd set. Whatever. But if he's going to include a dvd, why not a whole show, which fits easily onto one disc? A lot of bands out there offer live recordings of all their shows. Even Genesis did this with their last European tour, despite the fact that every show had an identical setlist. The two Elvis shows I saw last summer were very, very different from one another. Not only were the setlists very different, the tones were different. Having some kind of souvenir would've been nice. Two-thirds of one show doesn't cut it. More, please!

The price is a mistake, surely?
Apparently it has been done without his consent or control. Check out his commentary on his website: http://www.elviscostello.com/news/steal-this-record/254

Even Elvis himself recommends you don't buy it for this crazy price!
I just finished reading the post on Costello's page. Are the artists that far detached from the selling process that they have no idea what their items sell for?? Just seems difficult to believe.

Elvis Costello gives this a "thumbs down"
Did no one ever tell him what the price would be? It contained a hardcover book and several discs, so wouldn't a reasonable question have been "What is this heavy enormous thing going to cost my fans?". Did they not tell him, or state a more reasonable price, then renege? It's a tad... Read More

Online sale technique-price ultra high at first,so high that you think...
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a rip-off product - I do want the DVD/CD and will at the very least buy them separately when they come out for a reasonable price.

or wait until this is going cheap in the sales... as it inevitably will.

Elvis says the price is satire, a hoax and says DON"T BUY IT
It's a sales technique. I've seen this happen to a few other products...
