This review is from: Return of the Spirit: Tawfig Al-Hakim's Classic Novel of the 1919 Revolution : First Complete English Translation (Three Continents Press) (Paperback)
I had to read this for a class on Modern Egyptian History. Regardless, as of late I've been getting into historical fiction, so I was quite interested in this title from the start. Return of the Spirit looks at one Egyptian household in the early 20th century. The book provides some social commentary on foreigners, nationalism, women, different social groups, romance, and traditional practices. It's an interesting read!

This is one of the best books I have read so far. It gives a view in the life of a typical Egyptian family in the beginning of the 20th century and it is valuable for the reader for it shows how people think and live and act. It shows the wonders of love in lives with nothing to expect, it is a call to a nation to wake up and take its future into its own hands. It is a praise to Egypt and the Egyptian soul. They say this book affected Nasser and his revolution. I strongly recommend it.
