Editorial Reviews

This sequel to The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of follows in its footsteps with a selection of 46 classics of American traditional music recorded in the 1920's (on 2 CD's) - many of them are among the great iconic performances of the whole genre, including selections by legendary perfomers like Bukka White, Charley Patton, Dennis McGee, Eck Robertson, Ishman Bracey, Uncle Dave Macon, and many more. Included is a 54 page booklet that tracks the history of collecting old 78 records from its beginning in the 1920's through the '60's.

This is the second in an apparently on-going series from the folks at the Yazoo label. This new collection is similar to the first, with a number of rare tracks and some original, benchmark recordings of songs we've heard by other artists in the blues/country/folk/sacred genres. Basically, if you liked the first collection, you'll like this one as well.

There's a good mix of relatively well known artists-like Hambone Willie Newbern (sometimes spelled "Newborn"), Geeshie (sometimes spelled "Geechie") Wiley, Charley Patton, Ernest Stoneman, Robert Wilkins, Henry Thomas, Charlie Poole, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Blake, and others. But alongside these artists are people like Alex Hood & His Railroad Boys, Appalachia Vagabond, Ashley's Melody Men, Mississippi Possum Hunters, Elder Golden P. Harris, and many others, who give this set it's real weight.

The sound varies of course, but as a whole is better than you'd think. This music is taken directly from original 78's, and thanks to remastering by Richard Nevins, this music sounds better than it has a right to. But this music is so good, so important, that any imperfections aren't much of an issue. There's a good combination of various genres of music, but what they all have in common is their sometimes haunting sound and feel. Much of this music is highly evocative of that period, and a number of these tunes are pretty essential for any good collection of "American music".

Picking highlights is pretty much impossible-everyone will have their favorites and/or hear a rarity that they didn't know existed. Just one example of the breadth of this set is the tune, "Irish Girl/Blue Breeches", by Packie Dolan & His Boys.

This is the second volume in a two volume (so far) series from Yazoo Records. Volume 1 is titled Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

This is another very good collection of 1920s and early 1930s American music, taken from old 78 rpm records. It's pretty evenly divided between blues and country recordings.

This is a 2 CD set and the full storage capacity of each CD (about 75 minutes playing time) has been utilized.

The sound is good for music of that era. I see a few reviewers are complaining about background noise in some of these recordings. I don't see that as a major problem here; there is noise reduction technology readily available but it tends to cut out some of the high frequencies, so using it is frequently a trade off. I have no problem with the sound on this collection; it sounds good for recordings of this era taken from old 78 records. The only criticism I have is with one track on which the sound of the stylus being placed on the start of the record is audible and has not been edited out. But I can live with that.

One suggestion for Yazoo Records when compiling the next set in this series: keep it restricted to rarities. On this one, Yazoo included recordings by artists like Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson and Furry Lewis which are readily available on CD. Material like Hambone Willie Newbern doing Roll And Tumble Blues (later covered by Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and others as Rolling And Tumbling) is far more obscure and hard to get so keep the next collection focused on these more obscure recordings.

Overall, a worthwhile collection for anyone who likes blues and country music from the 1920s and 1930 or who has an interest in music history.

I would not play this at a party, but it is amazing to hear songs from the dawn of recording. Folks sure had a different mind-set then.

Nice collection of out-of-print and hard to find music from the 1920s, 1930, etc. It's a nice companion to "The Stuff that Dreams Are Made Of."
