4.0 out of 5 stars Essential stuff but try to get The Original Super Ape!, October 27, 2003
This review is from: Return of the Super Ape (Audio CD)
This album is a must for Lee Perry fans and reggaelovers alike! However, try to get a copy of 'The Original Super Ape', which incorporates the 'Return of the super ape' album with 5 rare bonus tracks added!
For me the absolute killers on this 1978 Black Ark album are (amongst others) the mindbending "Jah Jah ah Natty Dread" & "Psycha & Trim" (both with divine Perry madness/beauty/mastership) and the unique and incredibly beautiful "Bird in Hand"...

Hail to the mighty Upsetter!

5.0 out of 5 stars strictly "the best", June 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Return of the Super Ape (Audio CD)
If you're only going to buy one single Perry LP, let it be this one. It's got the songs, it's got the dub, it's got the Africa, and more than enough Perry madman activity to blow any and all listeners completely away. "Bird in Hand" is one of the strangest, most beautiful songs ever. Great range of styles from the "peak" period, defying all categories...

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this CD, September 18, 2006
This review is from: Return of the Super Ape (Audio CD)
Picture being in Jamaica in 1976 in a dancehall with the smell of ganga wafting through the air, the music verberating and dancers winding their bodies. This CD is filled with chaos. Lee "Scratch" Perry explores the sounds that surround him and puts it into his songs. The listener can either be dancning or relaxing which is what makes "Return of the Super Ape" unique. This is a collection to hold onto.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Dub, February 21, 2003
By
This review is from: Return of the Super Ape (Audio CD)
With the exception of a couple of yawners, this is a cd that is in keeping with the origins of dub. Clever use of echo, reverb and sound effects, along with some of the rootsy-est bass lines to be found, make it hard to resist. Especially good is track no. 5, Crab Yars which is reminiscent of the disco era.

5.0 out of 5 stars the mighty upsetter, December 29, 1999

This review is from: Return of the Super Ape (Audio CD)
if one listens to some of the innovations on this cd, one will understand why lee "scratch" perry is called the upsetter. his sound upset the entire reggae industry at the time because it was so psychotic and dread and successful, he proved that he could take the crown from king tubby but didn't. and i swear the track, "the lion", was stolen by nintendo for donkey kong

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Ape is a masterpiece from Bob marley's former DJ, August 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Return of the Super Ape (Audio CD)
'Return of the Super Ape' is a rare vintage jem from Bob Marley's former DJ. Recorded in Perry's "laboratory" in the 1970's, it has an eerie, mystical feel to it with haunting echoes and jungle melodies. It's a must-have for serious lovers of reggae music.
