I was dissapointed that their sound had changed so much.
A. M. Lewis
The Steroe's sound was very pop/emo influenced, as opposed to the Impossibles' previous work, which could be considered to be ska-core punk.
Jason E. James
I urge anyone who is a fan of music to buy this album its truly impressive.
S. Robbins

The Impossibles originally broke up in 1998 and one member, Rory, formed the band 'The Stereo' with another Fueled By Ramen labelmate. The Steroe's sound was very pop/emo influenced, as opposed to the Impossibles' previous work, which could be considered to be ska-core punk. The Impossibles' new CD borrows from The Stereo more than the Impossibles of old, but something totally new is also thrown in there. Return has a highly emo/melodic sound to it, similar to bands such as the Alkaline Trio or Weezer. However, if you listen hard enough, you can tell there are bits of Impossibles still in there, especially in the painful cries, usually provoked by a girl, or the rock solid guitar riffs. The only down side about this album is its length. With Anthology by the Impossibles being over 20 songs long, just 12 songs on a new CD is quite short. Other than that the Impossibles have made a completely successful return, even if their sound has completely changed.

Update! 9/25/2011 - 11 years later I wanted to brush up my review because I don't think I covered the originality of The Impossibles sound. I saw them live on Long Island, NY shortly after the album came out and they electrified it to new heights. The comparisons to Weezer are to old school rockin style, but this is much fresher and interesting and does have some of the craziness of At The Drive-In and other forward-thinking bands. The Stereo just did a reunion show with Rory and Jamie together again for Fueled by Ramen and they rocked the house, watch the video on youtube! Part 1: [...] and Part 2: [...]
Listening to this album today I am way happy to hear music just as interesting today as the day it came out. Now if I could only see The Stereo myself, or The Impossibles again! I'm looking forward to any new tunes from these guys!

My original review:

The Impossibles have crafted a fine album which highlights a crossroad for the band. The once ska-tinged group has let their stronger rock infleuces, such as Weezer, take a more center stage in this album. The songs are as good, if not better, than their previous attempts, and as a whole achieve a fresh new sound for the band-only fitting for a group that has been broken up for 2 years. This album is a great choice for Impossibles and Weezer fans alike. You will not be dissapointed!

Being a teenage scenester from Austin, Texas it is mandatory that I listen to the Impossibles. But then again, whats wrong with it being mandatory when the band is as great as they are. Many times when a ska/punk band try's to change their style, they often crash and burn (Goldfinger, No Doubt, even (some songs) scene favorite Less Than Jake). Impossibles, however, take it in a different direction, wheras instead of going completely punk, they added many Emo and Indie rock qualities, and it really works out. Many compare the "New" Impossibles to Weezer, I think this comparison is completely off as it is the most original than any album this reviewer has heard in a good long time. AUSTIN ROCK FOREVER!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say that this album is a must. Even though many have said that this band has changed or lost their touch. This great band from my home town of Austin has finally grown into their own and have explored a new relm of music. I remember watching these kids when they were a poppy punk band called the "Fat Girls" and with many changes have become one of my favorite bands. If you enjoy just a great fun band with allot of energy, check them out. A must see if you are fortunite enough to have these Texas proud boys show up to your town. Keep up the good work and hope you the best. And Craig congrats on the marriage.

I figured I'd write a review on this disc since nobody has mentioned it in a while. Hopefully someone will get to this through one of my recently released cd reviews.

I remember when I first got "Anthology". I was in 11th grade, and the album totally fit my mood and went well with the other cd's I was listening to at the time. It was easily one of my favorite high school cd's. Then I picked up "Return". After one of two run through's, I put the cd away. I was dissapointed that their sound had changed so much. Well, that's the type of decision a hard to please 18 year old will make. Five years later I broke it out, and couldn't believe what I had been denying myself for the last half decade. "Return" is awesome, every track rocks. These guys grew so much so quickly, but for some reason I was blind to it. Unfortunately the Impossibles are no more, but for me listening to "Return" is almost like having a new Impossibles cd. Check it out if you haven't yet, or if you've dismissed it. 5 stars.

I am from Austin and therefore I may be a little more biased towards this band, but I think this cd is amazing. This was the first cd of theirs that I heard and I immediately fell in love. The throat straining screams, aggressive guitars and catchy lyrics make this one of my favorite cds of all time. Many compare them to weezer, but it's so much more than that. Their cd after this is also amazing, but too short.
