Book Description

Across the street lives a mysterious bald man whose only companions are cats. Delora Calatrava, his new and only neighbor in an otherwise unoccupied cul-de-sac, is convinced this man has lost everything that ever mattered to him. She has discerned this just by peering through binoculars from her bedroom window while the man seemingly rocks his life away on his front porch swing, his feline friends keeping him company.

What Delora doesn't know is that this man's name is Ben Davenport, once one of the world's most famous rock musicians. Six years ago, following his band's grand finale tour performance in Orlando, Florida, Ben exited the stage to discover his wife had fled the country with another man, taking Ben's five-year-old son Bryan with her. Following an exhaustive and fruitless worldwide four-year search for his son, Ben took up residence in the city where he last saw Bryan, hoping that just maybe his son would somehow be returned to him. After two years have passed, Ben's hopes are fading fast.

But across the street lives a woman who doesn't believe in ever giving up on anything. Ben soon discovers that Delora Calatrava is a force of human nature that cannot be easily turned away. But can her friendship and boundless determination fuel his will to take back all he has lost?

Return To Middle C is a story about the healing power of love, hope, music, and unwavering faith.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The writing of this book was inspired by the relationship I have with my own son. Though he was never kidnapped as the boy in Return To Middle C was, we were kept apart at a great physical distance by the "family court" in Central Florida. The alienation I experienced informs the somber narrative of this novel, at least at the beginning of it. In real life there was a happy ending to my own personal story. Read Return To Middle C to see if rock musician Ben Davenport ultimately triumphs himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars The power of hope in the midst of despair September 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Return to Middle C is a heart-wrenching tale of loss, despair and hope. When Ben Davenport's wife disappears from the face of the earth, taking their young son with her, Ben is crushed. After four years of fruitless searching, Ben gives up ... on life, himself, and God. The only thing keeping him from killing himself is his concern for the stray cats he adopts.

He lives alone, in a drugged stupor, sleeping away as many hours as possible to escape the pain of his existence until a beautiful woman moves into the house across the street and begins to spy on him through binoculars. She looks past the despondent, and unattractive hermit and sees the man he once was as well as the man he might again become. If only he'd let her help him.

Mr. Shultz writing style is poetic, thoughtful and powerful. The story is paced like a classical concert, orchestrated to sink deep into your heart with early passages of quiet introspection that build in intensity until it crescendos into a powerful climax. The final refrain will echo in your heart long after the music ends.

Just finished reading this book and it left me in "good tears". What a great portrayal of a father's love for his child.

This story is very well written and the characters become real immediately.

In my opinion...a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional journey worth taking December 10, 2013
By Lee Ann
Format:Kindle Edition
Ben Davenport seems to have everything. He is a successful rock star who is deeply in love with his wife and son. But what seems to be a charmed life changes in an instant when his wife leaves unexpectedly and takes his son, Bryan, with her. Suddenly Ben's world is shattered and his life spirals completely out of control. When all efforts to find them fail...Ben buries himself in seclusion, overcome by unbearable grief that destroys his soul.

But then he meets Delora, and what begins as an unexpected friendship blossoms into a relationship that would spark life back into his soul and a renewed energy in music that reignites a worldwide search for the love of his life, his son.

The author captures the reader immediately through a brilliantly scripted account of this emotional ride where the deepest, rawest, purist kind of love is expressed through Ben's unbearable pain. The reader will quickly become invested in Ben's journey and will undoubtedly want to dive into the actual pages of this book to help him complete his mission, find his son and help Ben learn how to live and love again.

The author shaped Ben's character by providing a glimpse into Ben's past and how his talent for music began as a child and how he emotionally invested everything into his relationships even at an early age. Ben's character is believable and engages you on many levels. When you're not fully invested in Ben's emotional turmoil, the author brings you on an artistic ride through Ben's musical genius.

This book made me cry, it made me laugh and it made my heart pound through it's final moments. It's a journey worth taking...

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN'T RATE THIS BOOK HIGH ENOUGH January 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just finished reading this book and it's one of the best I have ever read. It was a freebie and I am so glad I picked it up, but it's worth every penny if you have to buy it. Don't wait, get this book and read it. It's a very heart wrenching and alternately very heart warming story, one that will stay with me for a long time. It's definitely a keeper and I will re-read it at some point in the future. I'm a big music buff and I love the different song references throughout the novel that I could look up on Amazon and listen to and even download a couple of so that when I listen to those songs I can remember the characters in this book. The book was very well-written without so many of the usual Kindle mistakes. Overall, just a top notch book that you will surely love as much as I do. Thank you Gregory Shultz for writing such a magnificent story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Troubled Life of a Rock Star July 13, 2012
Format:Paperback
I love this novel about Ben Davenport, a world famous rock star and cat lover. You won't soon forget Ben or Delora.

From the moment Ben's wife, Stella calls him to say she's taking their son, Bryan and leaving him, Ben falls apart.

After Ben meets his Puerto Rican neighbor, Delora Calatrava, you will find yourself hoping they fall in love and marry. And above all, you want to see him reunited with his son. After four long years go by, I began to lose hope.

It will break your heart to see this rock star not with his band touring and enjoying life.

Throughout the book, I kept wondering where the title of this book came from. That isn't revealed until the end and I like it.

I've never read a novel about any famous rock stars and I highly recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat lovers and the people cats love February 1, 2012
By Ann
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I read a book that lingers in my mind long after I've read other books, then I know it is a 5 star book. This is one of those books. This review won't help you decide to read the book, but is rather musings of mine.
The first clue is the cats. A person who is kind to cats, and who has cats love him back cannot be hopeless. Kindness is a primal trait, believe in it.
Family bonding is another clue. Precious and fragile. The nurturing found in loving families overcomes great trauma. It provides deep roots that ground a child no matter how young.
[Deep sigh] I really liked this book.
The final clue - the name of the book -- makes wonderful sense and is explained at the end.
