Book Description

September 1, 2007
Many Christians have replied to philosophically sophisticated forms of atheism (Nietzsche, Bertrand Russell, Michael Martin, Kai Nielsen, et al), but today there is also a growing literature of atheism geared to the popular level, the realm of the so-called village atheist. Joel McDurmon tackles popular atheism in a popular but cogent way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally dishonest, June 28, 2009
By
Earl Lee (Pittsburg, KS United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Return of the Village Atheist (Paperback)
In his famous debate with Rev. Wilberforce, Thomas Huxley made the famous reply, "I would rather claim descent from apes than be forced to admit that I had as an ancestor a man who would use his rhetorical skills and education to promote a fraudulent argument and thereby defend a falsehood."

I had much the same feeling in reading this book. The author cleverly shifts territory so that he is attacking communism rather than atheism. He creates a "straw man" argument to advance his own opinions.

In fact, all the evidence shows that atheists are happier than theists, of any kind. The least "religious" countries are the most prosperous. The prisons in the United States have only a tiny percentage of atheists, compared with the overall population. Alcoholics Anonymous doesn't cure any more people of alcoholism than any other program, or even no program at all.

There are many facts that run counter to the "spin" presented in this book. It is too bad that the author apparently, even himself, does not believe in his thesis. If he did, you wouldn't try to defend his thesis in such a dishonest way.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts, April 8, 2009

This is actually a BRILLIANT book, in its use of the atheists own words to expose their agenda. It is remarkable how atheists, who love to tell us there is no higher power to tell us what to do, invariably want to...TELL US WHAT TO DO!

A great read, with a bit of a satirical touch!
