The next morning, Simon called for me and we drove off.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“I wanted to visit the ancient woodlands at Oakhurst forest. There’s a prehistoric ditch running through it, marking some kind of tribal boundary.”
“You really are heavy into history, aren’t you?”
“Yes. But if you think that’s going to bore you, we can go somewhere else.”
Woodlands. Primeval forest. That didn’t evoke ideas about history or culture to me. It made me think of open-air sex and raw passion. Maybe even pagan rituals. Perhaps we were going to have a good day after all.
It took us half an hour to get there. We parked in a secluded spot and began walking; Simon carried a map and we began trying to trace the beginning of this ditch that intrigued him. We heard birds calling in the trees, and the occasional rush of animals running around in the undergrowth. But no other people seemed to be around.
“It’s almost like stepping back in time,” I said. “We’re the only ones here.”
“Yes,” he agreed. “It’s quite restful, in a way, don’t you think?”
Simon quickly found his bearings and we were able to find the start of the great ditch in the middle of the woods. It ran south-west to north-east, and we soon set off on the north-easterly trail.
“Of course, there weren’t woods here when the ditch was first cut,” he explained. The forest would have spread gradually from the east, around a couple of thousand years ago. By that time the area would have been abandoned.”
“Why would they have left this place?”
“Who knows? They ran out of animals to hunt, a succession of crop failures, tribal wars – yes, they had ethnic cleansing even in those days – although it’s a modern term, they still did it back then too.”
We followed the trail of the ditch for nearly three miles, and then decided to take the route back to the car.
As we neared the car park, I turned to Simon. “Do you know what I’d like to do now? This place is really making me feel horny. I’ve got this erotic notion that we strip off our clothes and fantasise, pretending that we’re prehistoric man and woman.”
