Book Description

October 1995
In 1848 the first Women's Rights convention took place in Seneca falls, New York, convened by the suffragist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. At the convention, a black man, Frederick Douglass, was the only man to speak in support of Stanton. This books tells the story of Stanton and Douglass, and of their form of democracy, striving for individual responsibility, freed from prejudice and the politics of race and gender. Mythologizing history mingled with autobiography, confession, social reflection and psychology, the author describes his vision of a new kind of humanity for the future.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Bradford Miller presents an unusual and fascinating portrait of the history of Seneca Falls, New York. Mr. Miller grew up with the legacy of the First Women's Rights Convention, which was held in Seneca Falls in 1848. Centering around the fiery Elizabeth Cady Stanton and a runaway slave named Frederick Douglass, who teamed up with Ms. Stanton to make demands for women's vote and legal status, Miller sees Seneca Falls as a "psychic highway" for all American white males to understand the significance of the abolitionist movement and women's rights. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars an in-depth look of the forces needed to overcome inertia, July 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Returning to Seneca Falls: The First Women's Rights Convention and Its Meaning for Men Today : A Journey into the Historical Soul of America (Paperback)
Mr. Miller does a great job describing Seneca Falls, NY in the mid to late 20th century and gives a great perspective of the emotions and thoughts a young man goes through growing up. Let alone the wonderful look at the suffrage movement of the United States and the forces that led them. A must read for someone looking for the connection of the suffrage movement and how it has affected modern day man.
