This review is from: Reunion (Men of Honor) (Paperback)
From the back cover:

Was love enough to keep them together?

As she journeyed across the northern frontier to join her fiance, Lauren often thought of the hardships she would face as the wife of a Canadian Mountie. But she never imagined that her first challenge would be her own betrothed, for Adam McPhail now seems distant, cautious, not the same loving suitor who won her heart two years before. Shaken and confused, Lauren wonders if the marriage she's dreamed of has ended before it has begun.

Though Adam yearns to take Lauren in his arms and never let her go, he can't find the words to say what is in his heart. His joy at having her close again is shadowed by his fear of what lies ahead. For Adam knows that the life of a Mountie is filled with danger--and his new assignment will take them deep into the wilderness. How can he ask the woman he loves to endure that with him? And yet, how can he face it without her by his side?

And my review:

The main thing that drew me to this book was its unique setting. Very few historical novels are set in Canada, nor do many feature the Canadian Mounties. Being Canadian myself, I was interested to see how the author would handle this premise.

The research was well done, and the historical details were well woven into the story. There were no "info-dumps", or sections that read like a history textbook. The writing style had a fairly decent flow to it, with a good balance of prose and dialogue, and no jarring point-of-view switches.

However, I felt a little let down by the romance aspect of this novel. We never get to see the hero's initial courtship of the heroine, so we're just supposed to accept it as a given that the hero and heroine love one another. Yet despite being told this over and over, I never really felt it.

And call me old-fashioned, but I got a little sick of the heroine always pursuing the hero. While I admire a strong woman who will fight for her man, I also like to see the hero do a bit of the work in a relationship. But instead, it always felt like the heroine was chasing after the hero, and he did nothing but reject her. I was left wishing she'd find someone who would recognize what a treasure the heroine was for being willing to give up her entire life and all of the creature comforts that she was accustomed to just to be with him. Yes, I understood that the hero wanted to protect the heroine from the harsh life of the Canadian frontier, but it got really old after a while. Especially since he supposedly loved her, she loved him, so there was just his bull-headedness standing in the way.

I enjoyed the history in this novel, but the relationship felt a little weak to me. I don't know if I'll try this author again, but this isn't a book I recommend highly.
