This review is from: Rev J.M. Gates 9 1934-41 (Audio CD)
This Cd contains some of the last recorded sermons of the Rev. James M. Gates-and some of his best! This collection contains a mixture of his styles. You have some of his comical cuts (New Dead Cat on the Line, a later version of perhaps his best known sermon), sincere mediations such as "Hitler and Hell," and some really great singing (I'll Fly Away), some thoughful meditations (his recollections on the Baptist World Alliance convention in Atlanta) and several excellent and rhythmic call and response sermons (It's Not What You Think it's What You Know). Rev. Gates really shows his versatility on these cuts, and it's not hard to see why he was so popular in his day. Had I lived in his era, I would have lined up for a front row seat at the Calvary Baptist church in Rockdale Atlanta, Ga, to see our man do his thing live. Rev. C.L. Franklin (Aretha's dad) inherited Gates' crown as the King of Recorded preachers after Rev. Gates died in 1945. Rev. Franklin, in a 1979 book collecting his best sermons, cited Rev. Gates "Dead cat on the Line" as inspiring him when he was a little boy. Rev. Franklin learned from one of the best. Listen to this and see why.
