3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, but not "intense"
This product is fun, but is not "intense" as the game says. My 13 year-old grandson and I played several games. It is educational because you have to add large numbers.

I learned a slightly different version of this game from family. In the version we were playing you only used 5 dice (Farkel uses 6) and the scoring was much more limited. When I read the description I decided to try this one because it had higher scores. I was also pleased to learn of the high stakes version of the rules which really makes things interesting. You have the option of continuing the previous player's turn and if you don't throw a losing roll, you get the same score they had plus whatever you just added.

There is also another version called Spicy Farkel which adds the capability of multiplying your score if you have red sided dice on your roll. I bought them both but you could save some money and just buy the Spicy version. The Spicy Farkel even includes rules for a different game that uses the same red sided dice. Farkel has made an already fun game even better.

This is a great game! It's fun to play with adults, but just as fun for children. We play it camping and at home. This particular size is great for those who can't see the dots on the dice. The pocket size is great for kids' little hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally portable fun game!, April 12, 2009

I purchased a Pocket Farkel Travel Set many years ago. My container is about the size of the center cardboard on a roll of toilet paper. Inside are six regular sized dice, a pencil, a rolled up score pad, and sheet of instructions. The game easily tucks into the glove box of the car, your carry-on bag and even your purse for entertainment anywhere and any time. It is easy to start playing right out of the container.

The object of the game is to get scoring dice on every roll and be the first player to get more than 10,000 points.

Each player must roll at least 500 points during one turn to get into the game. After that they accumulate points each time it is their turn. It is somewhat like Yatzee in that you get points for 3-of-a-kind, 4-of-a-kind, 5 and 6-of-a-kind, a straight, and pairs, and you can "change horses in the middle of the stream" if you would rather match up dice that you roll later than what you originally saved to the side. You get to keep rolling as long as you have dice that are scoring, however, you never know when you will roll dice that don't score (a Farkel). If that happens to you, you lose all the points you accumulated in that turn. So you have to make a decision every time you roll when to take the points you've accumulated and pass the dice, or risk losing the points you've accumulted that round by continuing to roll. Once points are scored on paper they cannot be lost. There are also "High Stakes" rules and options for for lower point games.

Take it with you so the next time you are camping, or stuck in an airport waiting for your next flight, or in the air for hours, or in the backseat of the car on a road trip, at a family reunion, or bored to death at Grandma's house you'll have something fun to fill the time with that takes up little room in your purse and requires only a small playing area.

For anyone not familiar with Farkel it is a dice game that's competitive and great for all ages. A combination of skill and luck players have to gamble to win big. This classic version comes in a can for storage and is great for family game night or parties. I have a couple different farkel versions including the Pirate Farkel Roll These Bones Dice Game [Toy] that's a perfect travel size. It's great for playing with a group and can even be played by yourself- you just try to beat your high score instead of competing to get the highest. It can also be educational, have the kids keep score to help them with their simple math skills!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great family fun!, September 22, 2008

On a visit to an older relative, we learned to play this game. Since then, we take the game as we travel and over to friends homes and play it in small or big groups. Simple enough to be played by younger kids, and has enough finesse to have possible playing strategies for us mature players. We usually laugh a lot when we play this. Although it's not strictly educational game, it helps you to learn to add. I have a lot of great memories associated with this game already. Inexpensive, but a great value, makes a great gift for people who love to play games.
