5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Farmer, January 19, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Revelation (Chalice Commentaries for Today) (Paperback)
In this astonishing examination of the Book of Revelation, Farmer debunks one of the most complex pieces of Christian literature with scholarly poignancy but also maintains a tone which allows the analysis to be incredibly accessible. A fast but challenging read, Farmer's commentary is an asset to scholars and general audiences alike interested in biblical studies and apocalyptic literature. This is no dusty volume in New Testament commentary but an extraordinary and invaluable addition to apocalyptic research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Commentary for Students, Ministers, and Teachers!, January 5, 2009
This review is from: Revelation (Chalice Commentaries for Today) (Paperback)
For a student like me, wading through the ocean of Bible commentaries often feels more akin to Olympiad training. Fortunately, Ron Farmer's Revelation is both comprehensive, though not exhaustive, and digestible, but by no means elementary, creating an inviting read that is quick, informative, and conducive to the average person's schedule!

Throughout the commentary, it is clear that the author is well-versed in his subject and has considered the varying evidence and perspectives regarding each passage. The introduction gives a concise background of Revelation, the schools of thought concerning it and its interpretation, and the language employed by the author. Though Farmer presents a majority of his commentary from a process theology point-of-view, he is extremely considerate of other interpretations, and never demeaning or polarizing.

Even from a non-academic perspective, this book is outstanding. The commentary presents readers with information and angles they may have never considered and challenges readers' presuppositions. It can be effectively used as a strictly academic tool. But, if readers are open to it, it can also present a useful theology compatible with progressive person's ideals and morality, without having to exclude portions of the text. Ministers, teachers, and students, even those who may have previously discounted John's Revelation as irrelevant or irreverent, can all use Farmer's methods to find meaning in it.

Lastly, if you are a student, consider yourself very lucky if this commentary is assigned for your class! If it is not, urge your professor to consider it. You'll be glad you did.
