The Innovator Strikes Again,
By
This review is from: Revelation (MP3 Download)
Only the hopelessly sheltered don't know the name (if not the music) of Lee `Scratch' Perry, a legendary figure if ever there was one. `Revelation' is the third installment in a trilogy of albums recorded with Steve Marshall, a musician's musician from the UK. Like the duo's previous collaborations, a few special guests have joined the party--the biggest names this go-round include George Clinton (the king of funk) and Keith Richards (if you need help here, you just need help). Is it reggae? Dub? Avant-garde madness? Electronic warfare? Yes to all, and therefore no to all, at least not in any definitive way. `An Eye For An Eye' features a slinky dub beat that is helped along by a perfectly sampled recording of a woman gasping in ecstasy, overlaid with industrial mayhem, while Perry drops science in a manner befitting a young Peter Tosh. `Scary Politicians' is a bit like a mash-up between Bad Brains and The Prodigy. Every track presents another dichotomy, sonically and lyrically. The album--like all of Perry's releases--should be mandatory listening for the entire world at least once, which might be all it would take to effect some real change to global perception.
