Book Description

August 9, 2004
Everybody knows Revelation is a weird writing. Grasping its message is not often easy and probably not first choice for a night's fireside reading. Nevertheless, most inquirers recognize the book's insights and prophecies as crucial to our lives. We need a guide to ease us through the complexities and out the other side with understanding and inspiration. Look no further. Revelation for Regular Readers tumbles out page after page of dependable discernment with engaging entertainment. None of us are "dummies" who want weak scholarship to push us through Revelation; most are "average" readers who would simply welcome a little help along the way. Revelation for Regular Readers is logically organized, solidly written, and glazed with humor and common sense. You won't regret plunking down a little change and settling in. Revelation speaks to the new millennium and now, thankfully, we can hear it clearly.

I am the author of six nonfiction books and one volume of fables. The latest production is Oracles from Olivet, the Eschatological Jesus. Previous publications include Discernment from Daniel published in 2002 and Revelation for Regular Readers, both by PublishAmerica. Next came Operation Revelation: A Teens Script for Earth's Final Curtain (with co-author Jan Ledford). My first published Bible study effort was Revealing the Revelation, released in 1998 by International Scholars Publications, now a subsidiary of Rowman and Littlefield. Each of these works is still on the market. An earlier publication, entitled Forty-four Fun Fables, is a collection of sermon-starters and expanded illustrations for speakers and is now out of print but available by special order.
Other publications include over 100 newspaper and magazine articles, poems, and essays in such periodicals as Reflections, Pulpit Digest, The Navy Chaplain, The Harbor Watch (New York City area), and The Bluejacket (Memphis, TN). I have variously served as editor and staff writer for several chapel and church newsletters. In addition, I have written and directed three locally produced plays. Several of my poems have been published over the years.
I hold a BA degree from Baylor University majoring in English and religion with a minor in history and a Masters of Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Supplemental coursework includes Marriage Counseling, Rape Crisis Counseling Certification, and Psychology of Personality and Adjustment.
I served as a pastor for two years prior to joining the U.S. Navy. My work as a Navy chaplain spanned a 28 year career until retirement in 1995 in the grade of Captain. I have also taught junior high, high school, and adjunct college courses in religion, history, psychology, and business ethics. I preach regularly and frequently have the opportunity for other public speaking engagements. I currently teach an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church, Franklin, NC. My retired years afford more time for professional writing and my avocation as artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Dummies Here!, January 17, 2005
This review is from: Revelation for Regular Readers (Paperback)
Take heart, prophecy fans. You're not dummies any longer!

If you're simply the average Bible student, you've regarded Revelation with a wary eye. Author Bernie Calaway agrees. It is "a weird writing," he says, but not one to be shunned. In fact, Revelation is the only book of the Bible that promises a special blessing just for reading it!

You will definitely be blessed by this volume. Calaway does not look down on his readers, but he doesn't shirk difficult explanations either. Where there are several opinions, he gives each (concerning the "Millennium" or the "rapture", for example). His text is not arranged in a verse-by-verse manner (which, by the way, is not always chronological), but rather he takes you to Heaven, shows you what is going on there, then descends to Earth and gives you a tour of "tribulation" on Terra Firma. Every "character" from Abaddon to Yahweh, and every place from the Abyss to Zion are covered.

You're getting more for you money here, however. Calaway draws from his knowledge of Old Testament prophecy (notably Daniel) to enrich and expound on the Revelation text.

This book is good for personal or group study (an outline is included in the appendices).
