From the Back Cover

"For many readers, Revelation is not revelation but rather a prophetic mystery that surpasses human understanding. Yet in this last book of the Bible, God permits us to see something of Christ and the church in heaven and on earth-and what we see is awesome indeed."-from the introduction

Marking the completion of Baker's award-winning New Testament Commentary series, Revelation provides a comprehensive look into one of the most intriguing books of the Bible. This volume closely examines each illustration, each meaning, searching for the heart of God's message in this our last direct letter from him. Kistemaker masterfully shows that the Book of Revelation, with its intricate web of symbolism and expansive and awe-inspiring glimpses of heaven, is indeed a "divinely constructed volume in which God shows his handiwork."

Book by book, idea by idea, verse by verse-Baker's New Testament Commentary series is composed for the benefit of pastors and serious Bible students who want quality evangelical scholarship communicated with clarity. Each volume offers fresh translation, verse-by-verse comment and application, and critical notes on the Greek text.

Simon J. Kistemaker (Ph.D., Free University, Amsterdam) is emeritus professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando. He received Gold Medallion Awards for four of the volumes in this series: Hebrews, James and 1-3 John, Acts, and 1 Corinthians.

It was certainly providential that a scholar of the level of Simon Kistemaker was around to finish the New Testament Commentary begun years earlier by Wm. Hendriksen. Continuing the fine scholarly work of Hendriksen, Kistemaker is responsible for that last several volumes of that commentary set, including the one on Revelation. Like the other commentaries in this series, Revelation is quite accessible to the layperson. Discussions of a more technical sort, including those that refer to the Greek text, are set apart from the main body of the commentary. This permits the more casual reader to focus on the basic interpretation of a passage, while presenting material of interest mostly to the critical scholar. Kistemaker, as a Reformed thinker in the Dutch tradition, not surprisingly adopts an amillennial stance in his interpretation of the commentary and interprets the book as a whole in a way similar to that of Hendriksen in his own work on Revelation ("More Than Conquerers"). At the same time, Kistemaker does acknowledge the existence of other interpretations of this book and is fair in his presentation of them.

This is excellent work. Dr. Kistemaker has a great desire that those who preach and teach the Word of God are fully equipped and are excited about their calling. The only thing better than reading Dr. K's work is listening to his lectures on the subject, and both are definitely well-worth the time. I will use this commentary as long as I have a place to teach and preach.

Kistemaker solidly presents in a clear way what is often not clear regarding John's Apocalypse. It's refreshing to see that some are still down-to-earth and not on the denominational pre-millenial dispensation bandwagon that is so prevelant today. Kistemaker's exegesis fits the 1st century audience who received the original message and his hermeneutic is right on target for today's audience--it makes good sense. Kistemaker uncomplicates the complicated and covers all the bases. This book challenges, delights, clarifies, and helps me rethink what I believe about the Apocalype and why I believe it. I recommend highly this outstanding volume.
