Book Description

October 10, 2007
The new book, The Revelations of George W. Bush, is a great political satire. If the Bush Administration scares you, or you're just afraid that one day you'll wake up to see martial law, troops in the streets, where everyone is forced to convert to Evangelical Christianity and wear a Biblical Patch, you'll feel there's a certain element of truth to most of this book. The book is full of half-truths and multi-truths, or, as Steven Colbert might say: "truthiness." In fact, one of the reasons this satire works so well is that it keeps you on the edge; part of you thinks "could this actually happen?" Then you realize some of it is happening right now. A must read.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Good political satire is always difficult to pull off. First, it has to be somewhat believable. Is there an element of truth involved with this or is it all goofy fun? Of course, it also has to be funny, and sometimes, "funny" is so subjective that it's nearly impossible to pull off. Thanks to the Bush Administration's absurdities over the past seven years, political satire is a little easier to pull off. In fact, it seems like everyone is taking a jab at the President's follies. Unless you are of the Bill O'Reilly/Fox News political affiliation, you've probably had a good laugh at our great Commander in (mis)Chief Bush at some point in the last seven years. The Revelations of George W. Bush by Volga X. is a sprawling, epic satire that has moments of pure comedy. Written like a "Top Secret" memo penned by Bush to clear up some of the questions surrounding his presidency, The Revelations of George W. Bush tries to cover everything that's disappointing about this administration, through the black and white worldview only Bush could pull off. The book begins with an alternate vision of history: George W. Bush has declared martial law after a case of bird flu sweeps the nation, and his administration effectively quarantines the country. Citizens become terrorists bent on "regime change," and Bush goes point by point on how his administration will control American democracy. He calls out terrorists (pretty much anyone who is not Republican or Christian) and turns a Democratic controlled Congress into his personal hand puppets George W. Bush also believes that God chose him to be president, faith-based health is the way forward, and that "everything you've heard from the terrorist media is all wrong." It's a paranoid world of murky politics and bad policies. Sound familiar? The book is full of half-truths and multi-truths, or, as Steven Colbert might say: "truthiness." In fact, one of the reasons this satire works is that it keeps you on the edge; part of you thinks "could this actually happen?" Then you realize some of it is happening right now. The Revelations of George W. Bush can be quite funnythe comedy is great, and the statistical evidence provided in the book backs up the comedy with an element of truth. Overall, The Revelations of George W. Bush is a great political satire. If the Bush Administration scares you, or you're just afraid that one day you'll wake up to see American democracy eroded away, you'll feel there's a certain element of truth to most of this book. Otherwise, it makes for an entertaining read. --Kevin Eagan, Blog Critics Magazine, December 13, 2007

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing in that it tries to be fiction but is scarily factual, July 10, 2008
This review is from: The Revelations of George W. Bush (Paperback)
This book caught my eye at The Boulder Bookstore in CO. I thumbed through it and there was so much stuff it boggled my mind.

I decided to buy it because as I leafed through it, I realized the most outrageous parts were actually true, and I had to take it home to research what was real and what was "political satire". There are a ton of books on Bush, most of which I find boring, apologetic, apoplectic, or full of stuff I already know. This one floored me with the amount of research -- most of which actually checked out, even though it tried to present the material in a humorous way.

If you want something that basically catalogs everything this president has done to this country, and (based on the publication date and stuff that seemed absurd but actually came to pass) this is a keeper. Since I live in CO and the DNC is being held here, I'm looking forward to seeing how much of this book is demonstrated by the way the various agencies handle the convention.

And if the seemingly preposterous premise that Martial Law will be declared and the elections either canceled or nullified actually comes true in the next six months, this book will basically become my political Nostradamus book.

If you care about politics, about the Bill of Rights and the abuses of Executive Privilege, you're really going to like this book. Even if you're sick to death of Bush, this book presents what's happened in the last 7 years in a much more amusing and less pompous way than similar books, and the line-by-line presentation offers the ability to check out the facts easily. I'm glad I bought it. And every time something interesting happens, I check the book to see if it was predicted. Pretty surprising. Learned a lot.
