Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Astrophysicist Vallee's venture into parapsychology is less likely to lure or convert skeptics than did the two previous volumes ( Dimension and Confrontations ) in his trilogy. Many readers will find a strain of paranoia in the author's argument that a lot of so-called sightings of unidentified flying objects in the past 40 years are the result of "complex hoaxes . . . carefully engineered for our benefit," with witnesses the victims. These incidents, Vallee believes, have been arranged by private groups with fantastic delusions which they want to spread, or by government agencies engaged in psychological warfare. He cites instances of willing dupes taken in by bizarre tales--one contended that aliens now working here had been captured by the U.S. military; another that a subterranean community of humanoids toiled beneath the New Mexico desert. From Library Journal

Vallee, a respected investigator in a difficult field (he was the real-life model behind the French scientist in Steven Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the Third Kind ), here presents the final volume of his recent trilogy of reports. (The first two are Dimensions: A Casebook of Alien Contact , Contemporary Bks., 1988, and Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact , LJ 3/1/90.) Readers with some background in the puzzling UFO phenomenon of the last 40 years will appreciate his insights. He pulls no punches with both government obfuscation and the lunatic fringe of UFO cultists. Most valuable is his international scope. There are few answers here, but several suggestions for rational lines of research. Recommended.

More About the Author

Jacques VALLEE holds a master's degree in astrophysics from France and a PhD in computer science from Northwestern University, where he served as an associate of Dr. J. Allen Hynek. He is the author of several books about high technology and unidentified phenomena, a subject that first attracted his attention as an astronomer in Paris. While analyzing observations from many parts of the world, Jacques became intrigued by the similarities in patterns between moderrn sightings and historical reports of encounters with flying objects and their occupants in every culture. The result was the seminal book Passport to Magonia, published in 1969.

After a career as an information scientist with Stanford Research Institute and the Institute for the Future, where he served as a principal investigator for the groupware project on the Arpanet, the prototype of the Internet, Jacques Vallée co-founded a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley. He lives in San Francisco.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Work By A Great Scientist, November 3, 2000
By
Trent K. Rollow (Seal Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews
Valle's finale to the UFO trilogy includes many incidents which have become household words. In the process, he shows how the unwary have frequently been made pawns in the ongoing controversy of UFOs and the holy grail of proof that so many are seeking or denying. As many have come to learn, the UFO controversy is a story that is true one day and false the next. The manipulations that go on inside the controversy are at once blatant and subtle; no "smoking gun" emerges, yet the magic show goes on. Why are so many lies used in refuting and denying this topic?

Written with penetrating insight, and at times wry humor. The insitence of this author that the reader think for himself may irritate some people while delighting others. Interesting and thought-provoking light is shed on the disinformation activities of those who continue to claim that UFOs officially do not exist. This book can be read as a stand alone, or as the conclusion to the observations made in the first two books in the trilogy (Confrontations and Dimensions).

5.0 out of 5 stars An ironic title indeed!, May 30, 2001
After a long hiatus (about 23 years), this was the first book I read on the UFO phenomenon. And I don't think I could have picked a better one start with. Here was a researcher who shared my reservations over the fascination with conspiracies and hypnotic regression and who openly doubted the extraterrestrial hypothesis.

This book presents an unsparing view of ufology in the '90's, Bill Cooper, John Lear, Linda Moulton Howe, Bob Lazar, William Moore, and Paul Bennewitz all make appearances. The ruling obsessions of the "ufo community", MJ-12, Philadelphia Experiment, Roswell, Implants, are examined and found to be red herrings on their best days.

I can't imagine the amount of rubbish I avoided by reading this book first. Thanks Dr. Vallee!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking, July 2, 1999

(REAL NAME)
Jacques Vallee continues his fascinating studies into the realm of ufology. The terrific thing about Dr. Vallee's books, is that he doesn't claim to know "the answer". He also encourages you to use your mind and think about all the claims and truths spouted by most ufologists.

While I might not agree with all of his conclusions, I appreciate the way that he presents his voluminous data and encourages you to make up your own mind. I encourage you to read this book if you're interested in the ufo phenomenon, and have read books by other authors. Dr. Vallee's unique way of studying this fascinating phenomenon is refreshing and very needed in the current climate of "final truths" about ufos.
