Editorial Reviews

Not only is this the first collection to showcase Kenton orchestra performances from all four decades of its existence, from Stan's 1940 rehearsal band through the final tour in 1978, but of the 68 tracks, only a small handful have ever been released anywhere! Sources include radio and TV broadcasts, live performances, rehearsals and studio sessions, while the recordings offer such candy for the Kenton collector as a bunch of unreleased charts from Kenton's most influential arrangers, totally reworked versions of old favorites and even three rare June Christy vocals (on My Guy's Come Back; All the Things You Are , and Lullaby in Rhythm ).

Biography

In February of 1941, a relatively unknown bandleader by the name of Stan Kenton auditioned his orchestra at the Rendezvous Ballroom on Balboa Island, California, one of the area's most prestigious venues for big band jazz. Although the band had only been together for a few months, they were able to convince the club to give them a summer booking. They opened on the night of May 30, 1941 ... This is a four CD set of tapes recorded at various locations over four decades, the 1940s through 70s. It's recommended only for the most ardent Stan Kenton fans, people who have to own everything available. The sound is poor on every CD and the quality of the selections varies considerably, from a slightly stumbling sight-read number, to a colorless "Finlandia," to a rocking "Aquarius," to an inspired and beautiful "Moorea."
The packaging is admirable and the intentions of the producers were noble. But this is a collection that on the whole does not display the Kenton band at its best and does not offer much in the way of moving music.

Steer clear of this bootlegged low-quality material. It is a silk purse containing a sow's ear! "Romantic" packaging attempts to hide sub-standard sound quality.Empeethree download from gnutella. This material does little to honor the memory of such a brilliant man, and at the exaggerated price it sells for is outright gouging of the unsuspecting buyer in light of the poor value it offers.
