What A "Revelation",
By "gemini_j" (Canada) - See all my reviews

Wynonna's third studio album Revelations is a 10 song collection of some of her best material. I'll even go out on a limb and say this is one of her best albums. She recorded the song "Change The World" before Eric Clapton, but she does cover Tina Arena's "Heaven Help My Heart" and the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Free Bird". She does them quite well! Wynonna is a country singer, her style is just so different from everyone else. But overall Revelations shows different sides of Wy, and her voice has never sounded better to these ears!

Best Wynonna album to me,
By Preston (nc) - See all my reviews

I still say that this is my favorite Wynonna Judd album. She said before the album came out that she had to go through over 2,000(!) songs to select the 10 for this album. Can you just imagine a lot of keeps and rejections that she had to go through? Wynonna sings with lots of passion here and I heard the few Tina Arena written songs on here that fit so well with her voice. Judd avoids the commercially-slick sound that dominated her second album and does a fine job vocally here. Even though she's not as dominant a female singer in country now, this is by far her best effort to me and solidifies her strengths as a solo artist outside of she and mother Naomi's '80s success as a duo.

Wynonna had a hit on her hands with this CD in which it seems she sang the kinda songs that she wanted to. THis CD truly seems like a Revelation as it reveals not only the many sides of Wynonna but many facets of life itslef. We see the spiritual side of Wynonna when she praises the LORD on DANCE SHOUT. Then we get it in a calmer version in MY ANGEL IS HERE: a truly breathtaking song which is just beautiful. SOme other beauties are the intro ballad TO BE LOVED BY YOU and CHANGE THE WORLD. DON'T LOOK BACK and LOVE BY GRACE are some meaningful songs which are ballads. OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER is a very wise song that Wynonna does well. The old Lynrd Skynard song FREE BIRD is done well here by Wy. A nice overall effort from one of the best singers out today.

It has been revealed!,

Wynonna is, to my opinion, the best country music singer, and now, lately with her "New Day Dawning", may be classified as the best R&B, etc., but Wynonna made an impression back in 1996 with Revelations, her 3rd installment of her solo career. Revelations starts out with a ballad, unheard of for Wynonna. The song, 'To Be Loved By You' made it to #1 on the charts and played often of the radio. Next, 'Somebody To Love You' is probably one of her best rocking songs which really "pound the ground". Change The World is a given to anyone who's ever heard Eric Claption's version but I thought Wy's was better produced and sung. Soft, contemplative ballads such as 'My Angel Is Here, Love By Grace and Don't Look Back really teaches lessons on love. Wy interprets these songs by the way she sings. Finally, as is Wynonna tradition, she ends the album with Dance! Shout! which leaves you feeling like your ears had just been to a party.

Wynonna Judd - Revelations,

Wow! I just love this one. She has that amazing growling voice and the music here is splendid. Clean production and good choice of material is here at hand. Ballads are in majority here and they're all beautiful. Rock fans won't be disappointed here with her own version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird", lasting a solid 7 minutes with long guitars solos, "Somebody To Love You" and "Old Enough To Know Better" (nothing to do with Wade Hayes' song of the same title). Otherwise, "To Be Loved By You", "My Angel Is Here", "Love By Grace" are strongly beautifully crafted but the best ballads are "Heaven Help My Heart" and "Change The World". At the end, there is a great R&B song where Wy gives all her strength. Wonderful set

Country: Wynonna Style,
By
This review is from: Revelations (Audio CD)
Once again Wynonna proves she is not your typical country singer with REVELATIONS, her 1996 album. The album spawned a few hits, most namely "To Be Loved By You" which is easily recognized as a signature ballad for her. With every Wynonna album there is a balance between uptempo songs and some nice ballads. She offers up a wonderful version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" which she handles very well, sounds like she's enjoying it. Also Tina Arena's "Heaven Help My Heart" which was also a hit, Wynonna does it justice here as well. "Don't Look Back" is a more traditional type country ballad, while "Somebody to Love You" and "Old Enough To Know Better" are the kinds of songs Wynonna just tears up. I really like the ballad "My Angel Is Here", such a sweet sentiment. And the closing inspiring "Dance! Shout!" is a nice addition to the CD as well. Overall REVELATIONS should provide what her fans like, something for everyone.

Great songs, great album,
This review is from: Revelations (Audio CD)
There are a lot of arguments going around on how 'country' is Wynonna. I suppose, technically, she is and is known as a country singer, but her style is so different than a lot of female country singers. She has a strong powerful voice, and the country songs that she does sing are tinged with the rock sound. Although there are songs like 'Don't look back' that sound true country. On this album she sings a wonderful 'Change the World' which by the way, is not a cover of Claptons, as Wynonna did it first. The song that she does cover here, is the wonderful Lynyrd Skynyrd song 'Free Bird'. But even though she does have a 'rock' sound to her country, there is nothing 'crossover' about her. She is no Shania Twain or Faith Hill. She is a strong country singer and doesn't need to flaunt her womanhood to sell records. Her sound is unique, give her a listen, I'm sure you'll enjoy!

The wait was worth it...,

We last heard from Wynonna in 1993 with Tell Me Why and then she was gone. Her personal life took center stage, she got married, she had two children, she graced tabloid after tabloid. But after a three year hiatus in the music world, Wynonna used her own spiritual cleansing to give to her fans a Revelation. It was in the form of 1996's quiet album, Revelations.Released after the success of the #1 single, To Be Loved By You, Revelations quickly became Wynonna's most personal album yet. Filled with Wynonna's standards of ballads, rockers and pew jumpers, Relevations satisfied fans with new material and a new breadth of appreciation for bucking tradition. Opened with To Be Loved By You and closed with Dance! Shout! Revelations fills your ears with fluid like music. You feel the pain in Don't Look Back, you sway to Change The World, you chuckle with Somebody To Love You, and you rock out to Free Bird. But what you appreciate the most is Wynonna's soaring vocals and heartfelt expression. It may not have been her sales best, but it's an album that brought Wynonna closest to her fans. We thank her for that!

Great cd!,

Wynonna has such a wonderful voice and it has matured wonderfully. She can be sweet, sassy or sultry. She is truly a very talented singer and a great entertainer. Every song on this cd is excellent. Her rendition of Free Bird is fantastic. I really don't like the original version of the song but I love the way she sings it. She also does the song Change the World (also done by Eric Clapton?) and again, her version is much better simply for the emotion that she puts into it. One of my favorite songs on the cd is My Angel is Here. It such a soft and sweet song and Wynonna really puts her heart into it. In Somebody to Love You, she still puts her heart into the song but it's very sassy. Dance/Shout is a phenomenal worship song. Loved by Grace is also an excellent and sweet love song. Whether or not you are a Wy fan, you will love this cd. I highly recommend it.

REVELATIONS spotlights the gutsy and strong vocals of Wynonna Judd. Several musical styles are explored and Ms. Judd performs with gusto and conviction. Notable tracks are the cover of Tina Arena's dynamic HEAVEN HELP MY HEART; the plaintive romanticism of TO BE LOVED BY YOU; her sultry version of Eric Clapton's CHANGE THE WORLD and the rocking cover of FREE BIRD.
While Wynonna has amassed a loyal audience and fanbase, she's disappeared lately. She has a strong presence, however, and this album should please her fans. |
