Like a lot of enthusiastic model building children in the early 70s, I too built and cherished this awesome Tom Daniel kit. Hey man, it had every thing a young boy could ask for back in the day. Guns, heavy armor and goose stepping skeletons no less. After my parents threw me out of their garage when I was 35 I lost possession of all my cool old model kits (I guess they tossed them out or sold them) Whatever the case I was never able to locate another Rommel's Rod that didn't cost an arm and a leg. These suckers were going for as much as $80 bucks at auctions and kit conventions, and I wasn't about to put out that kind of bread for something that was already opened and more times than not already partially built or had very aged decals, missing skeletons or wheels etc. Eventually people simply weren't building these any more, they had become too valuable for that. So a lot of the times you would be bidding on a kit that had been sold and resold many times over, having been shipped across contintents, stored in dirty old warehouses and closets, I mean, the old original vintage kits that were being sold for huge amounts of cash were starting to look pretty bad, yet people were demanding top dollar for them. And that totally SUCKED! But no longer! Here it is once again just as big and bad as it was back in the day! You can score one of these suckers for as little as $16 bucks at your local hobby store, I did, so I bought two of them!

Hey man, everything is here inside the kit. The vehicle is just as awesome and cool as it was back in the original. The dead goose stepping skeletons are present and accounted for along with their weapons and garb. You won't be disappointed!

This was one of my favorite models as a kid. I am eager to put this together and expect it will come out nicely. A slick and fun model. Nice for WWII buffs.

The kit is listed as a toy but it is a scale model that you need to glue together and paint if you want it to look anything like the box photo. This is not a toy that someone can push around on the floor, the best use after it is built is display.

Now as for the model:
1. The Casting is very good
2. The parts all go together well
3. The Decals are done very well and go on very well

The Kit is not super detailed with small parts, so I would say it's a level 2 model.
For best results I would say the model builder should be at least young adult, 12+.

Though the vehicle is not exactly historically accurate it has a look that says "I could be". It is easy to build and fun to detail. It's nice to see a German armor that the manufacturers were not too shy to place a accurate Affrica Corps insignia complete with swastika on the door. The Skeleton driver and commander are also really cool and the model comes with scale machine guns for the tail gunner port and windshield as pictured. I had a great time building this thing and highly recommend it to any modeler. It is a real gem in my collection. As far as durability goes it is easy and builds sturdy, as any plastic model kit anyway, but you don't want to play with it.

If you were a suburban boy in the '70's, other than rock & roll, you generally had 3 interests: custom cars, sick humor, and things that would make your parents squirm..this classic covered all three (assuming dad was a WW2 vet)! The re-issue is very well done; it matches the illustration, it's carefully molded and fitted with almost no flash, and additional details were added that weren't on the original. The instructions are well-written; the only exception being that they ask you to 'refer to the pictures' for decal placement, but the photos of all sides are not very clear. Of course it doesn't much matter, since historical accuracy doesn't really apply here. On that note, I found it somewhat disturbing that the swastika was included in the Afrika Korp 'palm tree' decal, although it's not shown on the corresponding location in the box illustration. Since this vehicle never existed, I'm wondering why Monogram felt it necessary to be that 'accurate' historically..but if you're skilled with the Xacto, just do what I did, and cut it out and replace it with scrap decals from other German WW2 kits, while retaining the image of the palm top.
