In the First World War history was written by Baron Manfred von Richthofen in his red Fokker tri-plane. The Dr. 1 was the most manoeuvrable of all the aircraft in use and achieved high rates of climb. The Dr. 1 that was delivered to the troops in June 1917 was withdrawn from the front at the end of 1917, but Richthofen continued to fly it until April 1918. On 21st April 1918 von Richthofen was killed when his plane was shot down at low altitude by Australian machine gunners.

Of all the planes and of all the pilots, the Fokker Dr.1 and Baron von Richtofen are by far my runaway favorites. This model used to be pretty easy to find when I was a kid, but they just aren't shelved anymore, thank God for the internet and Amazon!

I am not a hard core model builder, but I do have a room in my house with model airplanes hanging from the ceiling in a kind of dogfight. The Fokker Dr. 1 is in the center of the room and gets the most attention.

This model is not difficult to build and is actually a lot of fun. The spinning propeller and the detailed engine behind it really looks good. As do the double machine guns. I put all the white Iron Cross decals on it so it really stands out. It takes less than an hour to put together and is more fun than challenging. A great way to spend a rainy Sunday.

Wow, surprised on the size of this, not a big model. If your hands are bigger than an 8 year olds, bett get a different model.
