Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Despite protestations to the contrary, Manhattan news-network producer Robin Hudson (last seen in Nice Girls Finish Last, LJ 1/96) crams more living into one day than any of her friends ever could. When Karen, her young co-worker, fails to show for a Halloween girls' night out, Robin begins a kind of costumed scavenger hunt that leads from one personalized clue to the next. The clues?part of an elaborate charade staged by her one-time childhood best friend and fellow "cootie girl"?ultimately lead her to the scene of a murder. Anyone who knows Robin knows her investigations are unique, marked by wicked humor, endless spontaneity, crazy plot, nonstop gabfest, vivid action, and her unruly hair. A wonderful diversion.

From Booklist
Smart-mouthed news reporter Robin Hudson is back in another utterly outrageous adventure. Robin and her friends--fun-filled Tamayo; bald, tattooed Sally; sensible Claire; and innocent Kathy--decide on a girls' night out for Halloween. Then Kathy calls to say she's trapped in a married man's closet. Robin and crew set off to rescue her, but first they must complete a strange scavenger hunt that triggers memories of Robin's growing-up years in Minnesota, when she and her best friend were ridiculed as class misfits ("cootie girls"). By the end of the evening, Robin and her pals have taken a trip down Memory Lane, found a dead body, broken up a money-laundering ring, and rescued Kathy from certain corruption. The plot is thoroughly silly, but readers who like something different will find Hayter's in-your-face style, frenzied pacing, and tasteless but wildly funny humor a refreshing change. 4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous, September 20, 1998
Very funny, very unusual, very entertaining! The mystery is secondary to the plot but I did not mind one bit. Refreshing wit and lively characters make this a book you should pick up and read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not as good as earlier ones, September 5, 2000
By Barbara O'Neill (Danville, NH USA) - See all my reviews
Books like this are hard to rate. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as Ms. Hayter's first Robin Hudson mystery, "What's a Girl Gotta Do?" Yes, there were moments of humor, some really good, but all too often I found myself wondering just what in the world was going on. The first part of the story moved right along and was on par with Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" series. But then I found myself distracted by lengthy narrations into the history of the Cootie Girls and I lost the train of the plot.

Although the story line was one of revenge, I wasn't quite sure against whom. Was Robin the target, or just a pawn in a bigger plot? And, why? By the time I reached the end, my head was spinning and I was worn out from the convolutions the story took to try and figure it all out. I didn't feel the secondary characters added enough substance to the story, none of them evoked much sympathy from me, and seemed to be included just so Robin would have someone to talk to.

While "Revenge of the Cootie Girls" didn't entertain me as did "What's a Girl Gotta Do?" it wasn't a bad book and did provide a couple night's worth of nice reading. I just hope that Ms.Hayter's other Robin Hudson stories will provide me with greater reading delights.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as funny as the first two books, but funny nonetheless!, August 21, 1998
By A Customer
Crazy hijinks galore. Sparkle really knows how to create some wacky characters. This book wasn't as light as the first two and seemed somewhat dark as you began to see that what had happened with her good friend in the past had a totally different meaning when viewed now. You get to see how she developed her strong personality and have a better understanding of who she is and why. I look forward to the next Robin Hudson mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wasn't a bandit queen, I was a bit of a medieval kick-butt warrior princess.
After reading other reviews, I'm anxious to get my hands on more of Hayter's work. I thought this was great, especially the last 30 pages or so. The granny bit is hilarious. Read more
