(Four and a half stars) Their best album,

Basically with the very solid "Revenge of the Goldfish," the Inspiral Carpets combined the best aspects of their buoyant retro-sounding debut album, "Life," and their more serious weightier second album, "The Beast Inside." Start to finish, "Revenge" is exciting, and a pleasure to listen to. I especially like four songs: "Generations," "I'm Not Your Saviour," "Smoking Her Clothes," and "Two Worlds Collide," which I consider four of the band's all-time best. The first two mentioned need almost be listened to together in order to fully appreciate each. Along with "Smoking Her Clothes" the band demonstrates tremendous vitality, with fine lyrics and great vocal and organ work. "Two Worlds Collide," has an almost apocalyptic feel to it, and is easily the band's most interestingly unique song.
While there are other British bands from this period that I like better -- i.e. The Stone Roses, Charlatans, Verve, Ride, Catherine Wheel -- "Revenge of the Goldfish," which is the Inspiral Carpets at their best, stands up as among the better albums from the British groups of this era. No other post-1960s band has used a retro-sounding organ so effectively as Inspiral organist Clint Boon did. Plus, Tom Hingley's vocal work really stands out here, and is quite different from those other Ian Brown (Stone Roses) sounding front-men.

Time is best judge of music. Not sales or fans or media. Just time. And this brilliant album aged gloriously. Ten yars later, still powerful, contagious, euforical and fresh, it step to a higher level, where only masterpieces have place. Sales... Critics... Hype... Who cares? The art work on this album sings for it self! The greatest sadness of all, is the fact that, when i die,i will never be able to take this record to heaven...

Careless!!!! or insouciant shall we say? Inspiral Carpets released "Revenge of the Goldfish" wich is between other of their releases like "Devil Hopping" among others the best of the 90s British albums, they helped to define the past decade in its own identity, Stone Roses, soup dragons, charlatans uk etc did their part, this time Inspiral Carpents deserve my mention british avant-garde rock, and the sound of manchester were a part of my life at the time and still i keep a room for this genre

Even after a few years, this album still sounds great to my ears. I recall the day I heard "Dragging me down" on a "Live to Air" radio broadcast from a local bar a radio station I grew up listening to over the border in Toronto was doing and it was a great tune. From then on I purchased this album and have been a fan ever since, other notable tracks on this album which in my opinion are solid are "Two Worlds Collide, Bitches Brew and Disappeared." I would definitely suggest if you are a fan of the alternative movement from the 90s this should be included in your library of CDs.

If you're into the best alternative has to offer, then Revenge of the Goldfish is a must-have for your music collection. Especially great is Boon's whooshing calliope-like keyboards. Dragging Me Down is a masterpiece. It all brings me back to my old moshing days!

Musical Literature that's Actually a Joy to Listen To.,

When I purchased "Revenge of the Goldfish" back in 1995, I bought it mainly for the cult classic "Two Worlds Collide," mainly because I was impressed by the video. What I've discovered is an album that has literally something for every mindset. From the catchy, happy "Smoking Her Clothes", to the devastating critique of human nature with "Two Worlds Collide", Inspiral Carpets have mixed driving rythym with profound lyrics, giving their audiences a sort of musical literature that's actually fun to listen to. The songs on this album are just as great for jamming in the car while driving well over the speed limit on the interstate as they are for reflecting on human nature and philosophy. It is arguably one of the best musical investments I have made in a long time.

This album has always been in my heart since I was in college, a wonderful collection of songs that are uplifting, melancholy, these guys got a raw deal when they came out cuz they did have stupid haircuts, but the music is straight no BS full of worthwhile lyrics, and arrangements that are quite amusing and skillful. This album is better than Life less, depressed than the beast inside, I think the production holds up really well 11years after, get it now before its reissued with some tacky badge and extra tracks not meant to be there.

As an earlier reviewer stated time is the best judge for music. I started encoding all my CDs and after 2 moves across country I had lost touch with alot of my collection so when unboxing them and listening to them all again I forgot how good Inspiral Carpets were. Where did these guys go?Anyway this is probably the best album next to Beast Inside. If your new to IC start here. Wow what a great album. |
