Editorial Reviews

From the Author

After writing Amy and Lucifer in the light paranormal Witches Anonymous series, I wanted to write something darker and grittier with a female character struggling with her inner demons. Kali was born from that.

But I kept her straight forward and not wallowing in self-pity. She's determined to bring justice to the world...and enjoy making the bad guys pay while she's doing it.

I also enjoyed the secondary characters they did a great job of rounding out the story.

I honestly don't understand the high praise this book has received. In my opinion, it's a classic example of the mediocre quality fiction that is flooding the urban fantasy genre, and I'm tired of being sucked into trying a new author because of good ratings only to find out that the book is 'meh' at best.

The story itself makes little sense--the heroine has been carrying a torch for the man who dumped her 300 years ago, and in all that time hasn't actually seemed to grow or move past it. As soon as he enters the picture, she acts like a bad romance heroine, only one with supernatural abilities. I wanted to smack her. Three centuries, and this is all she's made of?

Of course, many men have the hots for Kali, she's all prickly and guarded due to her broken heart, tough with a sweet gooey center. Bad guys are really bad, with torture chambers, evil plans, and monologuing. All the overused tropes are present.

Some of the secondary characters are even more ridiculous, and unfortunately several of them can't be killed, because they're human, and Kali Sweet doesn't kill humans. I wish she did, because they're too stupid to live, especially the witch Victoria, who raises the Mother of Demons, and then gets an attitude about it. Not an awesome attitude, more like a bratty five-year-old attitude.

The characters are mostly two-dimensional,exposition is clunky, plot development is decent (but only decent, not great), and after half the book, I had to put it down. The heroine walks around in a miniskirt and a cape, talks about the male characters' "rock-hard abs", and generally sounds like someone you'd find fairly annoying if you really had to deal with her.

Ok complete cover honesty. I don't like it, Its blah, makes REVENGE IS SWEET look like it will be super corny and I would have never picked up the book to read the blurb if I saw it sitting on a shelf. Luckily for me I joined the book tour and decided to bypass the cover and read it anyways.

Everyone knows I like snarky ladies and Kali is snarky, has an attitude, doesn't take crap and knows how to kick @ss. She ends up being more then meets the eye. It was hard not to like Rad (Radison) even though he left Kali at the alter, he complemented Kali well and they worked well together when they allowed themselves to bypass their issues with each other. I also enjoyed the secondary characters they did a great job of rounding out the story. I enjoyed the world that Misty created. I could totally see myself in it among all the witches, vampires, demons, etc, etc. The story flowed well and a lot happened between the chapters. There were some great twist and turns thrown in. I have not read any of Misty's other books but I guess a few characters in REVENGE IS SWEET are in another of her series so I might have to check them out. The ending leaves you wanting to read more of the story so I hope Misty does another book tour that I can jump into. I'm glad I gave the book a chance despite the cover.

This is my first read in the genre "Urban Fantasy" and I loved it. I love Misty Evans' writing so that is the only reason I tried this book out. It was a very fun, suspenseful (to me anyway), romantic, humorous read. As with all of Misty's books, there is not "break" anywhere in the story where it is easy to put it down. The story just flows from one chapter to the next. Kali is such a tough, awesome heroine who knows what she wants, but doesn't at the same time. She has a vulnerable side like we all do. She deals with weaknesses like we all do, yet she is tough as nails and tries so hard to not show her weaknesses. The characters were all so well developed and the relationships between them were great. I really like Rad, Cole, Dru, Maddy, and Damon. Kali met Luc and Amy from the Witches Anonymous series and I loved the Italian slang words. In this book, I like how the fantasy stuff has a real twist to it and while they have magic and supernatural abilities, it isn't all about those as much so it is easier to understand. Highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next one to come out!

Misty Evans's first foray into urban fantasy proves to be a successful one. In REVENGE IS SWEET, she continues what she started in the ENTANGLED anthology with her short story, "Sweet Demon."

Kali Sweet is a vengeance demon, one of the best on Earth, sworn to protect humans from otherworldly creatures. When she kills a notorious vampire king, she's pulled into that world by her boss, Damon, who insists she take his place as queen. She's also managed to gather a few blood slaves along the way, including one who happens to be the on-again/off-again lover who jilted her centuries before.

I enjoyed reading this first book of the series. Misty Evans builds a wonderful world populated with witches, demons and vampires. Fans of her Witches Anonymous series will love the cameo with Amy and Lucifer. I love that she crossed the two stories in such a masterful way. For fans of urban fantasy, this book doesn't disappoint.
