The compositions are set in a variety of melodic frameworks which gives us a fascinating insight into the range of North Indian ragas that have evolved over the centuries. Though each raga has its own distinct personality, it takes a skilled and seasoned musician to bring out the depth of its true character. Ahir Bhairav, a devotional and deeply spiritual raga played in the early morning; Ahir Lalit an intriguing blend of Ahir Bhairav and Lalit; Miyan ki Malhar a powerful and highly evocative creation of Mia Tansen, the legendary sixteenth century court musician to Emperor Akbar who composc4ed the raga to attract the monsoon rains; the enigmatic Malkauns, one of the six original ragas of India; Kaushik Ranjani, a rarely heard but highly aesthetic raga which carries shades of more familiar ragas such as Kaushi Kanada and Chandrakauns; Parmeshwari, a contemporary creation of Sitar genius Ravi Shankar, showing that the art of innovation is alive and kicking in traditional music; Shiva Abhogi, conceived by C R Vyas, one of Mahahastra s most influential vocalists of the late twentieth century, and finally Yaman, vibrant and joyous in tone, and one the most popular and enduring evening ragas of India.
