More About the Author

Tom has just completed his fourth career: his first was as an economics professor, then an artist/craftsman, and most recently pastor of an integral Christian church. Now an unintentional author, he has written four books with a fifth in the works. His focus is on the evolution of human consciousness: developing practical tools and cultural stories that nurture expanding perspectives. His work is grounded in eight years of transformational practice during his 20's, a PhD in Education and 20 years studying Integral Theory. Tom's latest book, Crazy Wisdom: Tools for Evolving Consciousness, reflects 12 years experience leading individuals through deep personal change in a faith setting. Beginning with the Immunity to Change process developed by Harvard psychologists Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey, Tom expands their work for the unique opportunities of the faith setting. This is a wonderful book. Tom Thresher brings humor, poetry, and spiritual depth to his presentation of Integral theory. While focused on "integral church" this text is useful for anyone who is serious about accelerating his/her spiritual journey.

Much writing on Integral theory is brilliant but dry. This book is anything but. Myth, poetry, and mystical humor infuse the text with a feeling of intimacy and humanity. The stories and examples are wonderful.

Without a doubt this is one of the most helpful books I've read. I've long been a fan of Integral Theory, and loved Ken Wilber's Integral Spirituality - but its writing style is difficult and in-accessible to many - Reverent Irreverence covers the same topics, applies it specifically to actual church settings and is not only readable, but entertaining. Sadly, one has to know, or at least suspect, that there is more than the usual Sunday schtick to be motivated to learn more about what possibilities are.

I believe that Integral Theory, and, along with Dr. James Fowler and many others, working with and understanding stages of development is the answer to why there is so much dissension in American Religion, especially now with the huge division issues over inclusion issues of the LBGT community. Just as the Meyers/Briggs typology gave corporate America (and others) an understanding of styles that affect interpersonal relations, Integral offers that possibility as well. People are simply at different stages of spiritual development over what or how they see, interpret and contextualize scripture. I suspect that this book will become one of the foundational textbooks about what's possible in creating a Faith Community with this model - affording congregants an opportunity to map out the developmental levels for themselves and move towards greater spiritual awareness and freedom.

I'm hoping to start a study group on this book in my area.
