4.0 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself !, August 3, 1998
This review is from: Reverse Speech : Voices of the Unconscious (Examples Cassette Included) (Paperback)
Do you REALLY want that "proof" that you often read books like "Roswell" or "JFK, The Real Story" to find? .... only to be disapointed at last chapter's end? Oates is a troublemaker ! Reading his amazing theories of hidden thoughts .. words and complete sentences that are revealed in the reverse playing of Presidential speeches, criminal suspects statements, Government representatives, and (hold on tight now) .. even yourself!, will leave your jaw hanging open ..! Unlike UFO and similar secret "disclosures" that end with nothing truly revealed or 'testable", closing Oates book leads you to an instantly waiting hobby, ongoing experiment, and lifetime study that you can hear with your own ears and your own selected subjects ... if a person can talk, they can be reversed! The only real problem I have with this book is my indecision if Oates understands how many faint of heart might buy it for a "light read&quo! t; night of entertainment, only to find they are face to face with incredible reverse- hidden messages in thier beloved speech recordings of everyone from Stage/Screen/Tv personalities, leading newscommentators, even the manned moonlanding, one of Oates first found reversals ...) Buy the book. If you are not easily frightened, play the audio tape (s) as well .. but be warned! This is not "JFK expose' or "Roswell Revealed" sensationalism ... This proves itself in the privacy of your own home .. Samples have been heard by millions on Art Bell's Coast to Coast program ... experiment yourself ... read and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dont knock it till you try it, October 11, 2003

I dont see why so many people have such a hard time with this concept. I mean almost all of the senses are backwards and then reversed by our brains why couldn't there be something similar with our speech. The people that bad mouth Reverse Speech are those skeptics that turn down anything that seems out of the ordinary before they even give it a chance. Ive read the book and there really isnt anything that he doesnt explain as well as have evidence and customer satisfaction. So if your looking for a change or an anwser check this out. see ReverseSpeech.com

5.0 out of 5 stars An Explanation for "Satanic" Backward Messages in Pop Songs, August 10, 2003
This review is from: Reverse Speech : Voices of the Unconscious (Examples Cassette Included) (Paperback)
David John Oates has a controversial reputation especially after his legal battles with radio host Art Bell. He is an early pioneer in the discovery of reverse speech in which it is claimed than a person can say intelligible messages in reverse as he speaks forwards. These messages often reveal the subconscious of the speaker or what he is trying to hide. The messages are often metaphorical in nature, especially in pop songs when a singer may say something in reverse metaphorically about Jesus or Satan while singing a song. I thought this was an interesting explanation because I remember the backward message scare when I was teenager. A traveling minister came to our church one time and scared our socks off with his scary satanic backward messages from all my favorite rock albums. I got so scared I destroyed them--and then bought them all back a month later cause I missed all my favorite tunes. Funny stuff--I talked to some other guy one time that went through the same thing.

It is suggested that reverse speech may be useful in therapy, politics, and law to find about deeper truths about what a person is saying. Oates explains his theories convincingly and gives persuasive examples of reverse speech and how he has helped others in therapy.

I've listened to some speech in reverse and I have been able to make out what seems to be intelligible speech when playing it backwards. Most of the messages have not been that coherent or revealing--although Oates claims one must practice for hours to learn how to listen to reverse speech.

I'm sure hardcore skeptics will be chagrined over the concept of reverse speech, but those willing to give the idea a chance will find it fascinating, even if eventually proves to be hogwash.

It lays the foundation for documenting observations, ethics, honesty and giving proper credit to other pioneers doing original research. In the "Author's Note and Process Notes Sections" of this book the very essence of the beginning of original research is laid out in a manner that invites the reader to go further into the book to see what the author is advocating.

I have read Mr. Oates book and listened to most of the over 3000! audio examples of Reverse Speech on his web site. Can any one of these negative reviewers claim that? Reverse Speech is the first true 21st Century discovery. Find out for yourself.Don't accept on faith the opinions of those stuck in the 1900s.

5.0 out of 5 stars REVERSE SPEECH : A LOT MORE THAN WORDS, May 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Reverse Speech : Voices of the Unconscious (Examples Cassette Included) (Paperback)
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE VERY THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND INSPIRATIONAL(TO SAY THE LEAST). IT REACHED OUT AND TOUCHED ME WITH A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE ON HOW HUMAN BEINGS RELATE TO THEMSELVES, EACH OTHER, THEIR WORLD, AND THE SUPREME BEING. THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN CALLED CONTROVERSIAL, BUT, IF SO, THIS BOOK CAUSES CONTROVERSY BECAUSE IT CHALLENGES THE READER TO OPEN HIS MIND AND EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY THAT HE/SHE IS TRULY A LOT MORE THAN A FANTASTICALLY COMPLICATED THINKING MACHINE, BUT ACTUALLY A SOUL EMPOWERED BY GOD WITH THE INNATE ABILITY TO BOTH SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND REVERSE SPEECH ON AN UNCONSCIOUS MENTAL LEVEL. CORRECTLY HEARING REVERSE SPEECH CAN BE ACHIEVED BY ENROLLING IN THE TRAINING COURSES. THIS TRAINING EMPOWERS THE INDIVIDUAL TO USE A PAINSTAKENLY ACCURATE TECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO THEMSELVES, BOTH SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM BASED ON THE DICTATES OF THEIR OWN CONSCIENCE. IN "REVERSE SPEECH: VOICES OF THE UNCONSCIOUS", MORE THAN JUST VERBAL REALITY IS REACHING OUT TO THE READER WITH OPEN ARMS, AND THE AUTHOR, MR. DAVID JOHN OATES, DELIVERS A STELLAR INTRODUCTION TO A WORLD THAT ONLY THE SEEKER OF TRUTH DOES DARE TO EXPLORE.

Yes, folks, if we record our speech and play it backwards, hidden messages will be heard. These hidden messages are the "ultimate lie detector!" While we may lie in our normal speech, we never lie in our reverse speech.

To which I once again say "Oh, come on!"

(Now, if you want to know what I really thought of this book, read this message backwards....)

Anyone thinking that Americans are alone in their descent to scientifically illiterate will be assured to know that Australia is now infected. Oates' "discovery" is not Reverse Speech, but the well known idea that people are gullible. Most hoaxes, though, are more clever than Reverse Speech...

1.0 out of 5 stars How to you say "utter nonsense" backwards?, February 27, 2001
By
This review is from: Reverse Speech : Voices of the Unconscious (Examples Cassette Included) (Paperback)
Oh, the spirit of Jung and his latter day disciples. The holy "unconscious" is canonized, in fact, deifies everything human. The subjective has become the norm.

Now this "author" says that we say things forward AND backward and the backwards thing can be, like anything, I'm sure, interpreted by our therapists, the police, and anyone else who claims to be qualified to do so.

Yeah, and I can understand Lithuanian in Korean script too, only if I acknowledge what my "unconscious" tells me. If such a claim is ever used against me, I'll tan the hide of the accuser, then see to the punishment of the law enforcement quacks who buy into it!

Don't waste your time with this waste. If you want to read an examination of what "reverse speech" really indicates, I recommend the review of this book in the Volume 8, No. 3 of "Skeptic" magazine. That attempts something the author of this tripe never comprehended: objectivity.
