Stout's Story Not About the Curse,
By
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
Dan Shaughnessy made up the Curse of the Bambino in the late 1980s and all the ancillary myths (such as the overemphasis on the alleged angst of Red Sox fans has followed ever since). Glenn Stout's background research was more on the demonization of Harry Frazee and why he sold Ruth, not over the imaginary curse. That said, Shaughnessy is a talented writer, but given his previous milking of the Curse and some of his comments about this team (it was obvious he preferred another loss because it would be good for business)and the fans, that it was, perhaps, in bad taste for him to write this book at this time.

Isn't it enough that Red Sox fans paid for tuiton of CHB's,

kids, now he wants us to pay for his retirement home?I love how people are writing how great this book is, yet the book is STILL unreleased. You can always count on relatives, hey Dan-O?? There's a number of good books out there that chronicle the historic 2004 season that aren't written by Dan Shaughnessy. Buy one of those. I think Red Sox Nation has done much to much for this bitter hack, who just two years ago called David Ortiz a "pile of crap". Don't give this guy ONE MORE DIME.

This book was painfully incoherent at it's best. There are about 10 other books at the bookstore I bought this at (I bought them all, of course) and each was better than this. Out of the others I bought the Leigh Montville

Good Lord, not again,
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
Once again, Mr Shaughnessy spins the hoary old worn out story of his "Curse". Once again, brain dead readers will buy the book. Once again, Mr Shaghnessy will think himself a success, despite the fact that most people cannot stand him.however, he is sure that you're at the top of your profession. just ask him.

A Freakin' Parasite,
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
When I think of Dan Shaughnessy I think of a parasite. Leeching off the back of Red Sox nation for about two decades he is a disease that needs to be purged. The fact that Boston Globe employs him is a black mark against them and their ever declining credibility. Instead of buying this book you're better off cursing this "man's" name, reading a real newspaper, and giving your $20 to a homeless drunk on the street. The reason that people pile on to this overrated lump of dung of an "author" is because he writes about the Red Sox as if they personally owe him something. This man ruins lives and ruins the connection between the fans and the team and yet he still manages to churn out poorly written books in his free time. Maybe so many people wouldn't hate him so much if everything he wrote weren't about shock value and were instead about a love of the game. This man loves nothing except tearing people down and looking like an artifact of the 80's while doing it.

Double dipping from the King of Bile,
By
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
Dan Shaughnessy has already made a mint cashing in on the frustrations of the Red Sox' near misses over the years. He's built up a myth of a Curse affecting the team and has spun this negative drivel into countless TV, radio and national print appearances. Now that the Red Sox are World Champions, one would think that Mr. Shaughnessy would have the good sense to go slinking off into the night, his money-making premise shown to be a fraud once and for all. No such luck. In a stunning display of arrogance, Mr. Shaughnessy has sought to double dip on the money train and published a book about the Sox' historic victory. Unfortunately for Dan, the book is terribly written. The focus is meandering, the prose is choppy, the tone is still nasty. Mr. Shaughnessy continues to prop up his shattered "Curse" myth with ludicrous associations and snide comments. It's clear from reading the book that Mr. Shaughnessy's heart is not into it. Hes made his career writing about failures, and his attempt to write about stupendous success falls flate on its face. There are dozens of over books available about the Red Sox World Series Victory. Check those out. At least most of the others were penned by writers who actually like the Red Sox.

A New Book by the CHB,
By Jim Gosger "Jim" (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
Crazy Carl Everett wasn't the most beloved of Red Sox players, but he left us a legacy when he told Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe to "Get out of here and take your Curly-Haired Boyfriend with you." Thus Carl left us with the much used nickname for Dan Shaughnessy, the nastiest sportswriter the newspapers of Boston have ever produced. In the tradition of Colonel Dan Egan of the old Record American, the CHB believes it's his job to rip all things Red Sox. He is most infamously known for his creation of the myth "The Curse of the Bambino" in his previous "book" of that name.As every good Red Sox fan knows, beating the Yankees and sweeping the series over the Cards did not break the curse, it proved that there never was a curse. It was all made up by the CHB for the greater glory (and remuneration) of himself. In that previous book, the CHB portrays Red Sox fans as pathetic losers who secretly hope that the Red Sox will lose in the end. Nothing could be further from the truth. But the truth is something that the CHB respects quite a bit, because he uses it only on special occasions. There is no doubt that this new book (one of many that will come out on the 2004 Red Sox) will be nothing but a rehash of the same old tired curse story. Save your money and buy the new book that is coming out by Leigh Montville.

The Curly Haired Boyfriend mails in another one.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
Dan Shaughnessy, ( the curly haired boyfriend ) has mailed in another installment of his made-up curse series. This time CHB follows the Sox on their path to the 2004 World Series Title. Red Sox fans and most of New Englanders are extremely tired of this guy's act. For years he promoted the absurd "curse" and he once again tries to squeeze a few more miles out of this dead horse. For me, one of the more enjoyable moments of the Sox winning were the faithful Boston fans in St. Louis chanting " Shaughnessy Sucks !!" after clinching the title. Don't buy this book if you like the Red Sox or consider yourself a fan. Buy Stephen King's book a much better read by a much better human being.

Groping between incoherent and irrelevant, Mr. Shaughnessy flails away at our collective unconsciousness. Freedom never felt so dirty and ashamed. If you are a Red Sox fan, avoid this book.

We've heard this drivel before.,
By
This review is from: Reversing the Curse (Hardcover)
Despite the fact that many reviewers, Red Sox fans and decent human beings have contempt in their heart for Dan Shaughnessy, he has written a book about the Red Sox, not a biography glorifying himself. Though I can't say that wouldn't have been more entertaining. He rehashes the same old tired themes he's been writing about for years, and you get the sense he actually wanted the Red Sox to lose so he could promote his pet cause a little more. The reader never gets a sense of the unbridled joy and limitless passion that so defined that season and playoff run, and which is so apparent in other books detailing the magical season. Whatever you may think of the man, the book he has written should be last on the list of anyone looking for an honest account of the 2004 Red Sox. If I could have given it 0 stars I would have, and I'm thrilled that I borrowed a copy rather than purchased it.
