I have seen several times, on other various book reviews, people calling for editors to pay closer attention to the work of their writters. This book is no exception. I have not scrutinized the book but I have read through the entire thing and taken the first test in each section. I am now in my second read so I can improve my understanding of the science section. Thus far I have noted two mistakes. (I will update should I notice more in the future.) First, on the first quiz for Mathematics, question number 22 is 8 3/4 - 5 5/12 the correct answer is for when you add these to fractions. The problem is rewritten in the answer section. Second, while rereading the section on Chemistry the explanation for how to find the number of neutrons in an atom is miswrote. (Basic Chemistry: Chapter One, Final Line) Therefore, the mass number of carbon, or the sum of the number of protons and ELECTRONS, is 12, and the number of neutrons in carbon is 6 (12-6)

In all honesty, this confused me the first time I read the section so I just skipped over it. Poor choice, since my worse part in science is chemistry. Reading it thoroughly this second time helped me realize the confusion. I suspect there will be more "typos" as I reread these sections.

The reason I still gave the book 4 stars is that it does cover a great deal of area in a very concise and understandable manner. However, I do believe for those wanting to obtain an LVN/LPN it does go a bit into depth on unnecessary areas. The test for the most part, from what I have heard from others and read, is set at an 8th grade level. I agree with a previous poster, I too will be taking the PSB aptitude test for Practical Nursing, as such there should have been an area for spelling, (though if one brushes up on their vocabulary this could help) form relationships, as well as Judgment and Comprehension in PN situations. This would have given more information on what type of questions to expect on the test. (I understand that information on Vocational Adjustment would have been defeating to the type of testing.)

One final note, the CD offered is just a rehash of the questions in the book. The upside to the CD is that it grades itself. The downside is when being quizzed on the verbal/reading comprehension area the questions for the various articles you have to read are sporadic. Though, the article will regenerate each time you are asked a question. It is just a nuisance, especially when you are timing yourself.

-Update: If I could change my star rating to "3" I would. I have found further editing mistakes in the book. The final thing I would like to mention is in regards to the testing sections. There are numerous test questions of material not covered by the book, which means until you review the answers to your test you would be oblivious to the reason for a correct answer. (Unless of course, you had prior knowledge.)

I would not pay more than $15 for this book. Again, it is somewhat usefull but I would hope there would be books, which offer more.

-Final Update: The CD grading is not always correct. In an attempt to "mix things up" the CD will place the correct answer in a random order, unlike the stationary order of the book. There have been five instances where this as resulted in the grading system saying I got the answer incorrect when infact it was correct.

I bought this in the Fall of 2009 and took the test at the end of December 2009. I studied for the entire month of December - some days as much as 10 hours. The review guide was helpful in the Vocabulary/Reading Comprehension and Math sections. It at least was a good review and gave you good examples of what to expect. The Science section is greatly lacking, though. At the most, maybe 10% of what was on the test was covered in the study guide. Also, beware of wrong answers in the book and the disc used to take online practice tests. You can work around it but it is annoying!

This book has 3 things it covers, reading comprehension, math and science.

I would rate the math and science as 5 star and reading comprehension at 4 or so.

It has lots of practice questions. I think 4 tests on just math, 4 on just science and 4 on reading then the 3 complete practice tests that cover everything in the book.

The math covers about anything you can think of and explains how to do it also. Fractions, decimals, some geometry and algebra etc..

The science is also nice, a lot of facts on biology, chemistry and physics. Probably everything you need to know to get into the lpn course.

Reading comprehension is ok, but no explanations on why the answer they have is the right one. It is up to you to figure it out when some questions seem to have more than one answer.

It also has a good bit of verbal ability questions mixed in with the reading comprehension part, for example something like:

'They had an impromptu meeting today. Impromptu means' and then gives 4 multiple choice answers.

I only gave it 4 stars because from what I hear, there are things on the entrance exam thats not covered at all by the book.

There is no section for spelling which is on the test. It would be nice if it had a section for frequently misspelled words such as:

accomplish or acommplish, satelite or satellite, acomodations, accomodations etc...

It was written supposedly by the national league of nurses so they shoud have an idea of the words that will be on the tests. At least some of them.

Also nothing at all about the pattern recognition section of the test (what comes next in this series) type questions. Not even a mention.

They could of at least put a few tests to let you get some practice on how to look for patterns or something.

If you just need to brush up on math or your biology/science (which is really what i needed the most) this is a great book.
