Made a HUGE difference!,
By Juli Ferrante (Coral Springs, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam (National League for Nursing Series) (Paperback)
I had 9 whole days to study for the NLN test. I had never taken anatomy, physics, microbiology, mechanics, electricity, and Im only half-way through chemistry. I havent had math in 20 years. So I was a bit worried when I got this book and saw how uneducated I was on the science section and how rusty I was on the math. But I read the science section 5 times and took ALL the pactice tests. I also studied every question I got wrong. There really wasn't much I could do to practice for the reading test, but taking the practice tests helped me figure out 'their style' of testing so I was better able to figure the correct answer. The bottom line is, I scored a 151 which is in the 99% - top 1% score in the country - and I couldnt have done it without this book! But just buying it isn't enough - take EVERY test in the book and if you don't know your science, read the science review as many times as you can. When you score your test, go back and find out WHY you got an answer wrong. Tip: dont circle the answers in the book, but write them on a separate piece of paper, so you can go back and take the tests again. The real test was just like the review book. Also, be aware of TIME - I used every minute during the real exam! You need to do each test in the practice book in 45 minutes.

Good Representation of Test Questions,
By Brenda (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre Entrance Exam, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
The book is an excellent review and the test questions were very similar to the test I took; therefore I felt very comfortable and prepared as I took the test (and did well, 99th percentile overall.) I also recommend Grubers SAT prep for its vocabulary section (if you have the extra money to spend.) Grubers also has a great reading comprehension section. (The math review in it is a little more than what you need for the NLN, but great for people who have been out of school for a while.)
This January I will be entering nursing school and I really think without a doubt the Review Guide for RN PreEntrance Exam helped get me there.

GET THIS ONE!,
This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam (National League for Nursing Series) (Paperback)
If you are going to take the RN Pre-entrance exam to Nursing School, this book is a must have. It has all the different sections that are on the exam. Also, they have hints and suggestions at the beginning of each section. The math review, really helped also. I made a 132. Well above many of my friends. Thanks to studying with this book.

I just got my exam scores back and I got a 118, a composite percent score of 78 for the ADN program section I'm interested in, I'm not completely sure of my school's minimum standard, but the numbers look good to me. This book was helpful in getting me there. It contained very good information and practice questions that were very close in format to the real exam questions on the test. Having said that I say that this book is a valuable TOOL, not an answer book. You have to know the material in advance and then this book will be a great review for you. The formating is orderly and the summaries at each section are great for a brush up of the subject. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to enter the nursing program, it's well organized and worth the money.

Really Great for Review...,

This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre Entrance Exam, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
The questions in this book really helped me review the algebra and physics I hadn't dealt with in almost ten years. However, the authors assume you have been previously exposed to all the material, so if that's not the case for you (e.g. if you never took physics), you may want to pick up another book in addition to this one, or get some tutoring for the subjects you haven't taken. Otherwise, it's an excellent book; the questions are very similar to what was on the actual NLN exam I took in March. Even though I'd learned the material before, this book prepared me for the exam format, and helped me get a score of 164 (99th percentile).

Nice Study Guide,

As some one who has been out of school for 12 years, I used this book to study for approx. 3 weeks and received scores in the 99th percentile in all 3 areas! The science is a little weak, but if you keep reviewing and looking up WHY you got an answer wrong, you'll do fine. All in all a great study guide.

Very Helpful aide, with additional studying!,

I used this book to get an idea of what type of material would be on the test. The book guided me in what to study and was very helpful in preparing me for the NLN exam. I had to re-learn how to divide and properly do math problems without a calculator. I used the vocabulary from the verbal section of the review book and studied them for about a month before the exam, which I would also recommend. Although this book is helpful, it is just an overview or a way to refresh your memory of what you've learned in the past. I highly recommend this book!

not very helpful,

This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre Entrance Exam, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I devoured this book from front to back and I only scored 115. Although it gives you some review in each area covered on the exam, none of the vocabulary was what was on the test. Don't count on this as your only source. Check out a couple other review books, and good luck.Kathy

RN2B--hopefully one day,
By A Customer
This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam (National League for Nursing Series) (Paperback)
I only rated this book 2 stars because I feel like it wasn't as helpful as I had anticipated. The math portion was good--the practice questions were VERY similar to what was on the test. The verbal part--maybe it's helpful if you're a slow reader and need to just "pracice" reading passages. The vocabulary on the real test didn't even compare to what was in the book. The science helped some to refresh what I had already taken in school. But it didn't cover enough re: electricy and ohms and stuff like that. A lot of questions on my test were about electricity. I felt as if I needed to take a course in that alone to be able to pass the science portion. I took the test a couple of days ago so maybe once I receive my scores I will have a different opinion. Right now, though, I wouldn't recommend anyone buying this book.

Review Guide for RN Pre Entrance Exam...Very helpful place to start,
This review is from: Review Guide for RN Pre Entrance Exam, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
This review book gave great review material and on the money question formats. The format of the test questions I took were exactly like the sample questions from this set of study tests. Of course the questions weren't "ver batem" but they get your mind thinking in the right directions. The only complaint that I have concerns the reading/vocabulary portion of the exam. The book tried to offer some advice and examples, but honestly you just have to be familiar with an expance of terms/vocabulary. I think that the science portion was the most accurate in terms of subject matter and exact questioning formats. My best advice for the exam is to review this book at least twice over a period of time. Just like anything else cramming is not the best solution. Use this book like a month before the exam and like a day or two before it. I also consulted my A&P book for more in depth science study. My score were 99% in science nationally across the board, and 95% and 97% in all of the other composite statistics. Good Luck! And don't stress out the test really isn't that bad, just think fundamentals. Be familiar with the fundamentals, use the book, and be confident that everything that you've done up to this point has done a great job in preparing you for this. It is not rocket science, just the fundamentals. Just do it. No worries :)
