Excellent Choice,
This review is from: Review Guide For RN Pre-Entrance Exam (Paperback)
I purchased this book to help study for the NLN pre-nursing exam. This book is an excellent tool for learning about this exam. But the most important factor in determining which study tool to purchase is to remember that most of the information that is included on the CD and in the book is actually on the exam.

this book is a great mind refresher and study guide for the nln test! It has several sections for you to test yourself in and also teaches you HOW to do the problems, or explains the answer if you did not get it correct. it also comes with a handy cd that allows you to study on the computer! Definately helped me see what i needed refreshing on in math and allowed me to read a crash course of several sciences and it also had a section of verbal ability where it gives you some guidelines for choosing an answer and gives you several word examples to test yourself. Highly recommend! GREAT study tool and mind refresher! Worth the money! I passed!

NLN PAX Review,
This review is from: Review Guide For RN Pre-Entrance Exam (Paperback)
The actual test had far more A & P than was indicated by this review book. I never have taken Physics so I think the Physics was on a par with the level of questions in this book. All of the verbal was on a level above this book. The Math on the actual test was very heavy on fractions and algebra.
Since I have not taken a test like this in decades - it certainly helped. I scored well, juat expect the actual test to take it up a notch.

I had about 2 weeks to prepare, so following the advice of those who came before me, I studied and took all the practice exams (twice), with extra attention to the science section. Personally, I found the bio review to be adequate, but the chemistry and physics were a little lacking. I dug out my old college texts and reviewed the basics on the periodic table and wished I had reviewed the electrical currents section in physics. Nonetheless, this book is THE guide and you can't go wrong studying from it.

Disappointing at best....,
This review is from: Review Guide For RN Pre-Entrance Exam (Paperback)
Anytime you utilize reference material, you can't go wrong but if you are looking for a reference book that simulates exam questions, this is not the book. I scored exceptionally well on the exam so this is not sour grapes but wanted people to know what they were buying. The vocabulary in the book expands your vocabulary but less than 10% was on the exam. You'll struggle without additional resources. You'll need to purchase an ACT or SAT vocabulary expander if your vocabulary is limited. The math section was solid but any high school math book will have you ready. The science review in the book is minimal at best compared to what is on the exam. There was minimal verbatim questions or questions taken from the text. I had Cliff Notes for Biology and Chemistry and those put me over the top. If you have recently taken the ACT/SAT and scored well, save your money. Use your reference books from those. If you took an ACT twenty years ago like I did, Cliff Notes is the way to go. If you are looking for high percentiles and you struggled in school, this book alone is not the ticket. You should pass but you'll be guessing a lot along the way.

Although I did not use the included CD, the practice test material was indicative of the actual test. Great guide!

Overall, this guide was very helpful and I did score well on the NLN exam. The practice tests were particularly useful, and I think taking all of them is essential to doing well on the real test.
That said, this guide suffers from some atrocious editing, particularly in the science section (for example, they give the wrong quantity for a mole in the chemistry section: 6.02 +... instead of 6.02 x...). If you know the material already and you're just using this book for review, then you'll be able to pick out the errors. If anything seems off, check a secondary source. I even noticed a couple of questions in the science practice tests that had the wrong answers in the answer key. Also, this version of the review guide omits quite a bit of science material (especially physics) that was included in the previous edition. I have a copy of the older edition, but assumed I didn't need to study anything that wasn't in the new guide. I wish I had studied the old guide, though, because there were several physics questions on the exam that referenced material that was NOT covered in the new edition. While the poor editing in the science section is annoying, I don't have any major complaints about the math or verbal sections. You really do need this guide in order to do well on the test, and while it's not perfect, it can still help your score tremendously. |
