PRICE GOUGING!!!! BEWARE!!, May 23, 2008
As an emergency nurse for over 15 years I have seen my share of "ER nursing books". When I became a Certified Emergency Nurse I had looked at lots of review books including this one. And then when, as a private educator, I actually WROTE my own CEN review 2-day seminar, I used this book also.
This manual has 5 seperat FULL practice exams with answers and rationales. It is written by the same entity that is responsible for the actual CEN exam, so you need not look further for something more authoratative or authentic.
This manual is BEST used to test yourself to see what areas you are strong in or weak in. You should take one of the sample exams and score yourself and then see what areas you need to brush up on. This will maximize your studying effectiveness greatly. Then go back and re-take another one of the exams and see how you've improved.
The rationales are good along with the answer explanations.
The ONLY reservation I have about this book is that these sellers are WAY OVER PRICING IT! This book retails for $55.00 from the publisher!!!! These people (below) are gouging you for it!!!!

THE best review manual, October 2, 2008
I invested quite a bit of money studying for the CEN, purchasing several ENA books and a couple of non-ENA books. This was a GREAT way to study for the exam because it has a total of 5 practice tests that are the same length as the real test and goes over the rationales as to why and why not the answers are correct at the end of each test. Furthermore, the questions are labeled by category, which are the same categories as on the exam. This gives you an opportunity to see which areas you are strong in and which areas you require more work. I went through and calculated percentages for each of the areas covered in each practice test which helped me tremendously to know with what I needed help. This book makes it easy to do this.
In addition, I recommend supplementing studying with Sheehy's Emergency Nursing Principles and Practice and Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum to supplement the weak areas once they are identified. I did this in addition to attending a review course by Jeff Solheim (a WONDERFUL instructor) and passed the exam.
I also purchased Emergency Nursing Examination Review by Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio and Joanne Noone but couldn't get past the cardiac area because it was SO outdated. This was a turnoff for me so I did not continue to study with it. I have seen Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio lecture in person and she's great. This book would probably also be if it had much-needed updates. In addition, I purchased Lippincott's Q & A Certification Review: Emergency Nursing. While this book is okay, the answers are to the immediate right of the questions and the book is not broken down like the ENA Review book.
