This is a review text on medical microbiology and immunology containing approximately 625 board-type review questions on the left with answers and explanations on the right of each page. It is designed for medical students taking microbiology as well as for those studying for Step 1, 2 and 3 of the USMLE (National Board) Exams, including questions for Step 3 on infectious diseases or allergy and immunology. The book's main sections cover general and clinical immunology, general and clinical virology, and microbiology. The answers summarize relevant information and point out the fault in incorrect answers. Line drawings and figures are used for questions concerning structure of both molecules and organisms and for interpreting graphical results. Authors Reese, Brownell, and Nair, all with the Medical College of Georgia, bring a combined total of some 85 years of medical school teaching experience to their development of the questions and annotated answers for this book.
Andy Reese was reared on a farm in NE Oklahoma and has a BS in Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Missouri. (This causes some mixed feelings when OU and MU play football!) After postdoctoral work at Case Western Reserve University and Mt. Sinai Medical School (NYC), he joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia in 1975 from which he as a Professor of Immunology in 2000. Andy is currently a Ministry Associate at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta, GA.
In the latter part of his career at MCG, he became interested in applying insights from new developments in the neurosciences to computer assisted instruction. He co-authored a computer based course in Immunology and another in Medical Ethics (The Doctor's Dilemma).
Andy has had nearly life-long interests in science and in religion/theology. His book, Rational Spirituality, combines the these interests by summarizing what is currently known about science then discussing how this informs our understanding of the nature of god, our relation to the world of nature and to each other, and the creation ofmeaning in our lives.
Andy is a runner, swimmer, avid reader, and photographer. He also serves as "staff" for Kali the cat.
Andy has been married for 45 years to Alice who is also a scientist, shares his interests in science and religion, and has the added quality of being a gourmet cook.
