Book Description

Navy SEAL Dogs promises to teach your children all about how the navy trains these specialist dogs for combat, the breed used and expectations of these dog soldiers. They will understand the background of the navy SEAL dogs, the agility of the breed and their ability to locate people, explosives and weapons with their senses of smell and hearing. This educational publication opens up a world of action adventure for kids. The ebook explains everything about helping soldiers on their missions with vivid illustrations and captivating photographs. Read it in black and white or absorbing full color on your kindle.

This is a perfect ebook for kids to explore and discover the history of war dogs and the link between Belgian Malinois, working dogs and SEAL dogs. It includes explanations of: what the military has used dogs for in warfare stretching as far back as 600 BC, saving over 10,000 lives in warzones and frontlines worldwide; the close bond between these dogs and their handlers and ‘Cairo’ the SEAL dog who was part of the team that helped capture the terrorist Osama bin Laden.

For instance did you know that there are over 2,500 war dogs in service today with about 700 deployed and serving overseas or that a daring navy seal skydiver and his dog hold the record for the highest man-dog parachute jump at an altitude of 30,100 feet? The facts, pictures and explanations in the publication will keep your child fascinated and entertained, giving fun and enjoyment whilst improving understanding and knowledge.

You will understand why most of the western world’s military and law enforcement sectors choose the Malinois, whether it be for sport work, search and rescue, personal protection, detection, police or army work and how SEAL dogs are capable of working in military missions at sea, in the air and on land. You will see why these dogs are trained to detect and engage in ways that soldiers can’t such as explosive detection, reconnaissance, tracking, guarding, engaging the enemy, etc. You will discover what it is like for a soldier to take on, handle and train what will become a best friend. You will also get an understanding of some of the incredible equipment which has been developed to help these dogs perform their work; for instance, I was amazed that special dog goggles have been developed to help dogs recognize that there are people on the other side of a wall.

Combat canines are elite warriors, trained fearlessly to venture into our skies by parachute jumping or rappelling down enemy structures. Imagine your heart pounding in your chest while peering out over the edge of a plane 13,000 feet above ground with your best friend harnessed to you. This book will make you understand the close bond which develops between the trainer and dogs and how both are totally reliant on each other for survival. Loss of either party has a tremendous impact on the one remaining and stories of loyalty will bring tears to your eye

If you are a little bit like me, your child will be enthralled by the facts, photographs and information contained in the book. They will look at these remarkable dogs in a different light and will want to learn more about them.

"We want to be in a situation under maximum pressure, maximum intensity, and maximum danger. When it's shared with others, it provides a bond which is stronger than any tie that can exist."
- SEAL Team Six Officer

"Anyone can just go in there and kill someone, but you can't get information from a corpse."
- SEAL Motto

About the Author

Lionel Paxton is an author who has recently turned his hand to children’s books. He saw the need for informative picture books for children from the age of 5 to 10. Married to Mary Ellen, they are the busy parents to four boys, Simon, Will, and the twins Jack and Thomas. Books are typically the first exposure to learning and art that children get which urges one to make the very best books possible. He understands how important books were to his childhood. With them, he feels as if transported to some parallel universe, a world of grace and wonder.   Lionel said, “The boys want more than just picture books they also want to learn things they can tell their friends about. Jack in particular loves learning new things. He was sick of story books and wanted something a bit more challenging”. As the author of a few heavy historical novels he started writing children’s books for the boys not long after Will was born. Being boys they wanted adventure and scary dragons. But after Jack and Thomas arrived Jack wanted to read ‘real’ books about ‘real’ things, not pretend stuff. Not being able to find suitable books written to the capacity of a 4 or 5 year old, he started making little flip books on his computer and using pictures from magazines and photographs in his collection.   He sent one of these books to his publisher who thought this a great idea and has since commissioned a series of books for this age group. With the help of the boys he is currently working on several picture books about our land and sea animals.   Lionel lives with his family, Billy the bitser, cats Ghost and Patch and assorted lizards and insects in Ho-Ho-Kus, a suburb of New York (Northern New Jersey-Long Island).

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT information but needs editing September 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book very interesting - wonderful photos! Though for a kids' book (well, for anyone) I would want it to be impeccably written with conventional editing standards (because that's part of learning too!). This one seems self-published and could use another round of editing for fine tuning. BUT the info and story are great and well worth reading for boys and girls alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Navy Seal Dogs September 12, 2013

Very informative book. I heard about them, and even saw some, but their training and gear was beyond anything I could imagine. No wonder these dogs are given medals, they absolutely deserve them.

This is a truly interesting and informative book that was a joy to read. I certainly wasn't aware of the role that these intelligent and fearless dogs played in the field of battle. There are so many insights into the life of a Navy Seal Dog provided by this book and what part they play supporting soldiers in the field of battle. In addition, there are some fabulous photographs of them in action - a really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book November 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Excellent book and introduction to the world of military working dogs. Has great links where you can go to adopt one of the hero war dogs. I love the fact that dogs can and do hold rank in the military. I can just imagine a grizzled old gunnery sergeant, think Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge or R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket to a private.
"Private take the sergeant here for a walk and fetch he likes his ball!" I realise that it doesn't work that way but I get a kick out of it anyway.
"Scratch that tummy Private" lol

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding... September 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This has some outstanding pictures as well as informative facts about Navy Seal Dogs.

Trained to find explosives and to track and guard, they are also taught to jump out of helos with their trainer! I did not know that they have "doggles" which are special with infrared and night vision.

There is even a special suite for them that has a gas mask, oxygen mask, infrared camera and GPS. All this for a mere $80000!There are over 2500 in service today and they have been credited with saving over 1000 lives. These are just some of the facts and figures contained in this informative book.

Highly recommended.

I loved reading the Navy Seal Dogs! A Children's Book About Training Navy SEAL Dogs for Combat: Fun Facts & Pictures Abut Navy SEAL Dog Soldiers, Not Your Normal K9 by author Lionel Paxton. The photos showing military Malinois working dogs at work was a real treat to see. Many people do not know much about Malinois, so anything showing what the breed looks like; and the work they can do makes me very happy to read.

The information about the types of jobs the Malinois are capable of doing is well documented in this children's book. You will see Malinois training for guard duty, learning how to sniff out bad guys and, jumping from airplanes with their handler.

I would rate this book for older children as there is one photo showing what seems to be a fallen Malinois wrapped in an American flag in preparation for a burial.

As I love, and have been loved by a Malinois mixed breed dog, I loved reading about all the contributions Malinois make as part of the United States Navy SEAL team.

Recommend with caveats given.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains why they're such an important asset to have August 29, 2013

I found this book to be an absolute joy to read, and learnt so much more insights about these truly amazing dogs! I always knew that dogs could be wonderful companions, but wow, this book does a great job at explaining their importance & incredible contribution when aiding soldiers in capturing baddies in the field. I was quite surprised that they could actually train dogs to jump out of planes! And, I just loved the pictures of the dog with the goggles, and one with a face mask while in mid air! :)
