Oxford University Press deserves credit for publishing an edition of the NRSV which can be read by some people with poor eyesight. The only thing which keeps this edition from being perfect is that it is the "Anglicized Edition" which OUP produced for use in Britain, rather than the standard American edition -- a fact which is not made evident anywhere on the cover!

The differences are extremely minor -- spelling, punctuation and perhaps one different word per hour of reading. However, American readers with ordinary eyesight who want an easily readable edition of the NRSV text will prefer the New Oxford Annotated Bible, Third Edition -- and they will get that Bible's study notes in addition to the text.

This is not the NRSV that US readers expect -- it is a new version, "Anglicized," with British grammar, punctuation, and numbers. This new version is not indicated on the web page or on the box, but the title page notes the version and pp xix-xx of the preface explains. Most US readers would not prefer this version if they are looking for the usual "NRSV."

I bought my copy at Westminster Abbey in London and absolutely love it. It's easy to read and understand and particularly enjoyable for those of us who find the Elizabethan English of the King James Version annoying to read. The Apocrypha are an especial treasure if you've never read these books before. What a shame that they were ever excluded in the first place. The Bible, of all human books, should not be abridged.
