My Kind Of Jazz Piano,
By
This review is from: Red Garland Revisited (Audio CD)
This is another of many excellent recordings by Red Garland, a pianist known for his blocked chord technique which gave him a unique sound of which I'm so enamored that I'm still acquiring his recordings. This one was re-released about 4 years ago.Half of the sides contained in this cd were previously recorded with the Miles Davis Quintet....but these are different since two of them, "Billy Boy" and "It Could Happen To You" are played in a trio setting. The other two, "Four" and "Walkin'" include a guest appearance by guitarist Kenny Burrell. Red is known for his ability to play the blues (listen to "Hey Now") but his imagination and fine taste in playing the ballads have made him a favorite of mine. Three fine examples appear on this cd: "Everybody's Somebody's Fool", "You Keep Coming Back Like A Song" and "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over". If you like Red Garland or great jazz piano trio, you will definitely enjoy this!

Solid Piano,

This review is from: Red Garland Revisited (Audio CD)
this is one of my favorite trios. The entire band comes straight from the Miles Davis quintet's rhytmn section, so it is about as good a trio as you can have. The highlights of the album for me were the first track, billy boy. Red seems to play this song with more confidence than he did on miles davi's milestones. The band shows their skill and feel on ballads with track everybody's somebody's fool. the next track "four" features guitarist kenny Burrell and is one of the best and most exciting versions of the song that i have heard. This album by no means is a masterpiece of a classic, but i highly reccomend it to fans of jazz trio or for those who mainly listen to miles or coltrane and are looking for a good piano tiro album to expand their collection with.

Wow!,
This review is from: Red Garland Revisited (Audio CD)
Red Garland is not a very well known musician especially after he disappeared from the scene for a few years. He mainly recorded in trio settings like the one presented here. Here, we have-Paul Chambers, bass (check out his bowed solo on trk 1); and Art Taylor, brushes. Enjoy!
