Even though this cover EP has not been released in the US so far (only the import version), you should give it a try. There are 7 songs which explore genres so different as death metal (Hellhamer's "Messiah") and Rap (Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos").
Is it a "true metal" album? No. But was "Roots"? If you're looking for true thrash metal, go for Kreator's last release. This is Sepultura what we're talking about, and their job is to make good and DIFFERENT music.
The album starts with a heavy and dark cover of Hellhamer's "Messiah". Since the original version had been recoverd back in the 80's, poor quality, it's quite obvious that Sepultura's version got much better than the original one. Derrick Green roars as a lunatic, and you can actually feel the devil when he screams "666". Killer!
Changing moods, the second track is "Angel", by Massive Attack. The original one had an all trip-hop mood, which in a way was kept. Five-minutes long, depressing, extremely heavy guitars and bass.
The EP continues with "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos", by Public Enemy. Maybe the worst track in the album, probably due the appeareance of brazilian rapper Sabotage (who was killed in a shooting two months after recording it). It just doesn' fit. As for Sepultura's part, they did it pretty well, making the song heavy, even though it's a rap song. Nothing to do with new metal ones.
The fourth song is "Mongoloid", by the new-wave band "Devo". Regular track, with punk rock guitars and a death-metal-drum ending by the still great Igor Cavalera.
Then, we get to Janes Addictions' "Mountain Song". Good one, with vocals completely different from the original ones. Guitars heavier, drums quite the same.
U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" was probably the most pop song to cover. Yet, it got very heavy, especially due to Paulo Junior's bass. They actually made a video for this song (Brazil only, so far).
The last track finishes the album as it had begun: fast, heavy and furious. Exodus' "Piranha" is the "true thrash metal" headbangers are looking for.

Five stars. No band in the world is able to make a cover album with so many different bands and, still, keep up the quality.

No surprises. After all, they're SEPULTURA.

This Derrick Green era Sepultura album has covers from U2, Jane's Adiction, Devo, Exodus, Public Enenmy, Massive Attack and Hellhammer and they are all great. They may not all sound like the original but it's Sepultura paying tribute the way they know how. I wasn't disapointed with this album one bit. Bullet the Blue sky is my favorite
