5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, WOW, WOW, A Master Piece!, June 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
WOW, I came across this group by total accident and I feel so ignorant that I didn't know that this group had existed so long. HOW COME NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS GROUP? IS IT THE POOR MARKETING BY THE LABLE?

Anyway, Could it be the bass-lines, the soul-stirring strains of music or perhaps by chance, the change in attitude from strong-to-weak-to-pleading-to-scolding?

Boukman Eksperyans dosen't force us to go their way, we just go. My apologies to the mindless head-bopping music and groups, but this is grown-up music at its best! This is music that reaches somewhere deep inside, uplifting the spirit and provoking thoughts.

Unafraid to experiment, we have tracks ranging from an almost rock anthem, infectious bass, keyboards sound of "Tipa Tipa" to the complex congo rhythym of "Imamou Lele". Every song is incredibly perfect. Why cant more R$B and R$P (Common, Outkast, roots, Lauryn Hill, Wycleff, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo, just to name a few, are excluded) arti$t$ stretch themselves beyond boring repetitive booty-shakin' music? Are they afraid of being creative?

Boukman Eksperyans don't compromise its musical talents and never its morals, providing for what is sure to be one of the best albums you'll ever own. Don't sleep on this CD! I guarantee, you will love everything on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible work from a great artist, October 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
I got this album out of sheer curiosity, to get the flavor of the Carribean nation's music and the result of French colonization on African roots. I must say that I was instantly captivated by this most beautiful and souful music which has replaced all Reggae, Son, Samba and Fela Kuti in my head for the time being. A GREAT work form a GREAT artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, June 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
I bought this CD with a gift certificate because of all the hype I had read on Amazon and my love for the Fugees (Lauryn Hill, Wycleff Jean, Pras Michele), another Hatian band. I must say that I was ready for a disapointment, but I wasn't disapointed. Infact, this cd has become my favorites after all the Fugees CD's. Every time I listen to it I discover new things in the songs and the music, its a cd that i won't get tired of for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars And the Grammy Goes to......BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS!, June 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
The release of their first album on Mango records and their subsequent nomination of a Grammy Award marked Boukman Eksperyans as Haiti's premier, most succeddful and creative voice in the international music market. Many bands would have taken the proceed and headed straight for the United States or Canada to escape the dire political and economic situation in our country. The members of Boukman Eksperyans, however, chose to stick it out in Haiti and many of the songs on thhis album are a testaments to their spiritual and political vision in the face of repression, stagnation and despair that grips Haiti. The determination of Boukman Eksperyans is read by our people as a message of hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Essential - I can't believed it could get louder!, June 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
"In Haiti, popular discontent with the island's dictators and juntas surfaced through the music. When bands fused folkloric forms with amplified pop music, the "mizik rasin" (roots music) movement was born. The movement gained an international profile when BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS released the landmark Vodou Adjae album in 1990". The story of Boukman Eksperyans is one of complicated, chaotic political upheavals, one of danger, struggles and not least of all, one of an exhilarating, compelling musical journey in search of roots, social changes, political freedom and justice. During the election in Haiti BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS began to be associated with the Aristide political party as the Catholic priest was rising to power. Aristide, too, supported BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS music of roots, culture, social (political) changes for the Haitian people and roots bands began sprouting up throughout Haiti (similar to grunge after Nevermind). BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS demonstrated their endorsement of Aristide by playing at his inauguration. The fall of Aristide meant a discontinuation of support for roots bands and only a few well-established ones, including BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS, survived. The song "Kalfour Danjere/Dangerous Crossroads," from their second album of the same name, elicited death threats and phone taps but the band played on. Even if one doesn't understand the words to "Kalfour Danjere," the rhythms and voices is a compelling call to action. Anyway, REVOLUTION their 1998 release is maybe their best, that's a hard statement to make because every one of this group project thus far has been tremendous. The world need to wake up, we are pronouncing Rage Against The Machine to be a one-of-a-kind genius but it doesn't even take hindsight to realize that this group is a genius. REVOLUTION is loud, energetic, angry, defiant, intelligent and in nearly every track BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS music declares how urgent their mission and vision is. To put simple, the fist on the album cover says it all, REVOLUTION is truely a REVOLUTION.

5.0 out of 5 stars An electrifying and soulful rendition of Haitian folk music, December 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
The best album by Boukman Eksperyans yet! An electrifying and soulful rendition of Haitian folk music with contemporary arrangements. The music talks to the beat of the drum, laments to the cry of the guitar and resonates throughout our soul. No need to understand the language! The message is driven perfectly clear. Track 11 is really a "must listen." Then again,so is the entire album. Try it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH!, June 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
This album is so good, there are no words I could use to do it justice. BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS use soul, hip-hop, reggae, rock and pop to create a beautiful, incomparable album. With deep & though-provoking lyrics, BOUKMAN EKSERYANS stand tall and hovers above the superficial sappy music, that saturates pop radio today. For a group that was obviously influenced by Bob Marley, BOUKMAN EKSPERYANS lives up to his legendary example. All I can say is, hit us one more time because I can't get enough.

I listened to this cd about 20 times before checking the english translated lyrics. It was amazing how the music had communicated the spiritually poetic meaning of the lyrics. I believe that listening to this beautiful, uplifting music, can stimulate the thinking without language that liberates us from our own provencial mindsets. You'll wear this one out.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A MUST HAVE!, June 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Revolution (Audio CD)
Welcome to the the premier roots band of Haiti and maybe the world. Welcome to the group that is "defining a genre, if not creating it". Political activist, outspoken radicals, confrontational charged lyrics makes punk or even hip-hop sound like parlor chatter compare to Boukman Eksperyans music. Their music is the voice of the Haitian underclass and their struggles against their government is the stuff of legend in their country. This phenomenal CD from this group is easily the equal of Marley, Hendrix and Dylan is nothing less than essential. Throughout, the beats are solid, the solos are great, the lyrics are powerful and the rhythm are always preeminent (as a non speaking french-creole person, the translation that comes with this CD is helpful). WHEN IS THEIR NEXT PROJECT DUE?
