The criteria for defining jazz singing will probably be argued for the rest of time. But no matter which side of the argument one may be on, there can be no doubt that Giacomo Gates is an authentic jazz vocalist. Heavily steeped in the traditions of the original vocal improvisers from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald through their modern counterparts Betty Carter and Leon Thomas, ... Editorial Reviews

Giacomo Gates is an extraordinary vocal stylist. He's often credited as a contemporary Eddie Jefferson, but with his full-bodied baritone and blazing inventiveness he sounds like a cross between Billy Eckstine and Kurt Elling. As bracing an innovator as he is an interpreter, Gates transforms his latest recording into a cornucopia of delicacies that extends from the smooth and mellow to the razor-sharp. For his Savant Records' debut, Gates has chosen to perform a stimulating selection of songs by the influential and controversial Gil Scott-Heron. Scott-Heron made music that reflected the turbulence, uncertainty and increasing pessimism of the early 70s, merging the soul and jazz and drawing on an oral poetry tradition that reached back to the blues and forward to hip-hop. This material is tailor-made for Gates, who without question is the best-suited performer to deliver the satirical and insightful lyrics of a true American original, Gil Scott-Heron.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD Album of All Time July 21, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is definitely is my favorite CD of all time. I already was fan of both Gil Scott Heron and Giacomo Gates. The choice of instruments and variation in tempo connected well with GSH's heavy lyrics. The sound mixed jazz, funk and swing, and some solemn sounds that resonate with me differently each time I listen. I keep playing it each evening to unwind after work. Giacomo Gates clearly connects with the songs and adds hard-score scatting on some songs. The scatting really adds to the mood of the songs. The range in mood and message made me feel like I was on a journey finding a place, maybe even a better one, in this world. The song titled "Gun" hits the nail on the head inrealistically explaining the gamut of perspectives on the Second Amendment. The flute added to "Winter in America" was a genious idea, creating a perfect mix with GG's voice and GSH''s solemn lyrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great one July 23, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Giacomo Gates' voice is an instrument that speaks. I have always been struck by the songs Gates chooses for his recordings, they not only each tell powerful stories, but he is able to transform an entire CD into a storybook you cannot put down or one you want to read over and over again. Besides the soothing sound, the variety in tempo and the journey to a better place that other reviewers have mentioned, what I most love about this recording is the way that Gates makes these interpretations his own... phrasing, scatting, whispering, imitating a horn...The lyrics are uniquely Gil Scott Heron's, but they only come alive in this recording through the inimitable style of Giacomo Gates. This is a superb recording that already has found a special place in my music collection. I can't put it down, though...I'm even listening to it as I am writing this...

5.0 out of 5 stars smooth... July 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
From the opening notes of the first track, this CD grabs you and then sets an ever-varying mood. Up-tempo, laid-back and be-bop tunes weave a pattern of mellowness that can let the day's tension flow out, and put one at ease. "Lady Day and John Coltrane" is my choice for best song. Tony Lombardozzi's guitar on "Gun" is thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Sweet and Jazzy December 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is an intriguing project. Gravel-voiced Giacomo Gates doing the first (to my knowledge) tribute album to Gil Scott-Heron? What will it sound like? What "should" it sound like?

The latter question is the key. Undoubtedly there are those who would expect that the album should sound like Gil Scott-Heron, meaning it should capture the protest, the anger, the recriminations of a street poet and soothsayer. And certainly there will be those who will be disappointed that Gates doesn't do that here.

And he doesn't. This album is unexpectedly sweet. There is no "Johannesburg" or "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" here. There is a rendition of "Winter in America," but it sounds more like an elegy than a protest.

Some of that might be due to the choice of instrumentation. On "Winter," for example, the lead instrument is Claire Daly's flute. Throughout, Tony Lombardozzi's guitar sounds as clean as Charlie Christian.

"Gun," Scott-Heron's slap at the N.R.A. and the "ratcheting psychology" that the organization justifies, is a jazz-rock tune. Here, it sounds more jazzy than rockish, thanks to pianist John DeMartino's comping; but the piece makes you want to dance.

But Gil Scott-Heron also wrote songs like"This is a Prayer for Everybody to Be Free," a song that implores that there be no bitterness. That is a highlight here; and it is the feeling of these lyrics that really this group is going for. "New York City" is a tender love poem; the version here would have made a great theme song for "Sex and the City."

Ultimately, Gil Sccott-Heron was a jazzman. And therefore Giacomo Gates goes for songs like"Lady Day and John Coltrane" and "Is That Jazz?" He is not looking for songs that preach, so much as songs that swing.
