Book Description

May 1996
The author of the phenomental bestseller The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure now tells readers how to once again eat the "comfort foods" that they've been denying themselves for the sake of their hearts. Kowalski cuts through all the confusion about diet and the heart, providing definitive answers to the questions readers have about red wine, garlic, sugar, iron, stress, and other pertinent nutrition topics.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The author of the The 8-Week Cholesterol Cure, which espoused the wonders of oat bran, now offers breezy assurance that one can eat steak, eggs, and other cholesterol- and fat-laden goodies and still have a healthy lipid profile. The trick he says, is to block the absorption of fat with a weight-loss product called SeQuester (a formulation of bovine bile and soluble and insoluble fibers that binds fat to prevent its passing into the bloodstream) and the absorption of cholesterol with plant steroids. Kowalski also waxes enthusiastic about the cholesterol-lowering benefits of antioxidants, soluble fiber and niacin. Recommending a judicious diet and offering useful low-fat shopping and cooking advice, Kowalski rates popular weight-loss programs according to healthfulness and efficacy, offers a collection of his own low-in-fat recipes and frequently promotes his publication, the "Diet-Heart Newsletter." Weight is managed by controlling ingestion and expenditure of calories, he reiterates, yet readers are likely to focus on his more appealing suggestion that you can eat your cake and have it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way ahead of the field, October 10, 2000

This review is from: The Revolutionary Cholesterol Breakthrough: How to Eat Everything You Want and Have Your Heart Thank You for It (Hardcover)
The book is very thorough and informative, and at least 5 to 7 years ahead of the doctors who prescribe lipid lowering drugs. The book pointed out the dangers of Homosystene and Lp(a) well before it was labeled the "really bad cholesterol", and getting Doctors to prescribe such tests was like pulling teath. And after all thats said and done, It seems Niacin (well supported in the book) is proving to be better than the statins that are currently touted...particularly since the statins can not effect Lp(a), whereas,Niacin is the only cure for Lp(a). As a result, we are only now hearing about combination therapy of Niacin and statins.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful well documented book, August 14, 2003

This review is from: The Revolutionary Cholesterol Breakthrough: How to Eat Everything You Want and Have Your Heart Thank You for It (Hardcover)
I stumbled on this book while waiting for an appointment with a chiropractor. I was not particularly concerned about heart disease. What struck me initially was the careful research and quality of the writing of the author who is a medical writer, not a doctor . In addition, the opening of the book is very personal - as the author relates how he went from surviving his second coronrary bypass at the age of forty one to completely beating heart disease without abadoning steaks or other things he likes to eat.

He carefully puts together an analysis of how a good cholesterol-reducing diet can be followed and marshals the evidence - or lack thereof - as he discusses the claims and counter-claims made regarding various approaches and remedies. The section on the role of niacin in reducing cholesterol in especially good, although there now seems to be much more research on this topic. The references are very extensive and cover a lot of the medical literature on these topics.

I enjoyed the presentation enough to borrow the book from my chiropractor and finish it. Hopefully, this is a recommendation for you to consider it, if these topics interest you.
