I love the Utena tv series because of the mind warping plot twists, sublime background music, and great characters. This show gets more and more satisfying as it progresses, so satisfying that I often wonder why I wasted my time with technologically superb stuff like Ninja Scroll when I wasn't getting the enjoyment out of it that I am now with Utena. I truly think this is one of the better domestic examples of the the "girls' anime" like Sailor Moon and Fushigi Yugi(scary how anime can be categorized that way, eh?).

And not to mention that after years of inferior fansubs we are finally getting the entire show on the domestic market! Now if only Rose of Versailles which is rumored to have "inspired" Utena was released......

I gave it 4 stars because this DVD, like the two DVDs beforehand, only looks like it has 3 episodes on it (pretty much making this DVD about ... per episode, retail value). Don't get me wrong, Utena is a very good series, just that I wouldn't mind paying ... more for double the amount of episodes, like one does for the first two Utena DVDs. It's just a minor complaint, and I'll still continue to buy the DVDs because it's just that good of a series, but just to let everyone know...

Anyhow, onto the technical stuff. This DVD contains the "11th episode" of the Black Rose DVD (which is technically a filler, since it involves one character finding the diary of another character, with some silly stuff ensuing). However, the two episodes after it get into the Akio arc. The Akio and Apocalypse arcs go through the second round of duels between Utena and the Student Council (in essentially the same order as the first round). That, said, the final two episodes on the DVD will involve Saionji and Miki.

Again with the however, there's a weird twist. The two find out, along with the audience, what the dueling business is really about. If you didn't yet realize what the heck Anthy was doing with those Saturday nights spent with Akio (if you didn't, I must pity you), it will become BLATANTLY OBVIOUS with the second episode on the DVD. You also find out what role Touga plays in the dueling competition (which is one reason why I don't like Touga as a character). Overall, things do get weird here, and it really does presuppose a knowledge of the earlier parts of the series, so DON'T BUY THIS DVD IF YOU HAVEN'T YET WATCHED THE ENTIRE SERIES UP TO THIS POINT!!!

Remember the chorus that sang Mikage's duel song (and the sort of mood that the new chorus gave off with singing the duel song)? Keep remembering it. It's going to be around for the rest of the series. It's also going to sing the 3rd version of Absolute Destiny Apocalypse. Oh yeah, I should mention that there's going to be an overall change in stock footage and a new ending song (which is still considered one of my favorite ending songs to a series), and I'll leave it at that.

It is amazing. It just is. It's story is simply engaging and extremely, almost ridiculously complex below the surface. It would screw your brains into bits to actually pick out every symbol and hidden meaning. But they add to the story well and above all, it is the story and the characters that make this my favorite anime, no work, ever. Every character is beautifully flawed, easily admirable, simply relatable, and exquisite. I love every character; even Saionji, who's violent, Nanami, who's irresolute and cruel, and Akio, who's out for himself and perhaps through his old self, his darling sister, Anthy. If you're open minded and enjoy watching works on your television screen that plays like a poem, then pick this up and watch it over and over! By the way, I just randomly picked this DVD to comment on them but actually, I've seen the whole series already and every episode is worth watching.
